Men's Golf: Buffs Open Season Strong At Air Force
September 07, 2014 | Men's Golf
USAFA, Colo. — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened the 2014-15 season here Saturday and more or less picked up where it left off last spring, contending for tournament honors as the Buffaloes ended the day in second place after two rounds of the 46th Annual Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational.
CU set a school record with eight top five finishes last year, and after 36 holes, the Buffaloes are in with a 568 team score (8-under par); UNLV leads the 15-team field at present, as the Rebels turned in a 21-under score of 576. Colorado State (575) and Missouri-Kansas City and New Mexico State (577) round out the top five.
Colorado has all six of its roster members competing here this weekend, five designated to score and the sixth playing individually. The smallest CU squad since sometime before 1955 is both talented and experienced, with four players here in the top 27 and all in the top 43 in the 88-man field.
“We got things going in the second round today,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “A 278 is a good team score on this course, be we believe we can do better. UNLV has a comfortable lead right now, and we'll be paired with them Sunday. This is a veteran team so we are looking forward to see if we can close the gap and hopefully catch them.”
Senior David Oraee and sophomore Yannik Paul are pacing the Buffaloes, as each is in with a 4-under 140 total on the 7,420-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Golf Club course layout, good tie the pair for fifth with two other players. Oraee turned in rounds of 73-67, recording eight birdies on the day and just four holes worse than par (all bogeys); Paul tied for the team lead in birdies with nine and had three bogeys and a double en route to posting rounds of 69-71.
Junior Philip Juel-Berg is tied for 17th, as after opening with a 2-over 74, he came back with a 3-under 69 for a 143 score; he also tied for the team lead in birdies with nine. Sophomore Ethan Freeman recorded rounds of 73 and 71 to finish up 36 holes with an even 144 total, which has him tied for 27th. Rounding out the CU scorers is sophomore Jeremy Paul, who carded a 74-72—146 scorecard but still is in 34th place.
Drew Trujillo is playing here as an individual, and after struggling a bit with an opening round 78, he rallied for a 71 in the second; his 5-over 149 scorecard has him in a tie for 43rd.
UNLV has the top two individual performers through 36 holes, with Al McInerney at 10-under par 134 and Taylor Montgomery right behind him with a 9-under 135.
The final round of the tournament gets underway Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
