CU Men Place Five In Top 15 At RMISA Qualifier

PARK CITY, Utah—Sophomore Roger Carry had his best career finish of fourth and all five University of Colorado men's alpine skiers finished in the top 15 in their first action of the season with giant slalom races here Thursday at Park City Mountain Resort.
The race, like the women's version on Tuesday, was an RMISA race and team results were not calculated, but the placements count for NCAA qualification purposes.
Carry had one of the best performances out of the collegians in the race. Starting in 20th position, he cruised to the fifth fastest first run and improved one more spot in the second run to narrowly miss his first podium appearance in a college race. His two run time of 2:32.11 was less than a second behind the winner, Utah's Dominic Demschar. Who won with a time of 2:31.13.
For Carry, it was his second career top five finish, the other one a fifth place showing in the second RMISA qualifier GS race last year in Montana.
The other four Buffs finished within five spots of each other and were separated by less than six-tenths of a second, led by junior Henrik Gunnarson , who compiled his 12th career top 10 finish, taking 10th in a time of 2:33.22.
Junior Adam Zika was two spots back in 12th in a time of 2:33.43 while junior Cameron Smith finished 14th in 14th place in a time of 2:33.52 and junior Kasper Hietnanen finished 15th in a time of 2:33.80.
The Buffs will remain in Utah and be joined by the Nordic team as the Utah Invitational gets underway Friday with the women's GS races. The men's GS race will commence on Saturday and both gender's will compete in slalom races on Sunday. Sunday is the first day of action for the Nordic squads at Soldier Hollow and the meet will conclude Monday with the second day of Nordic racing.
WALES TAKES SECOND IN SLALOM RACE AT SNOWBIRD
The women's alpine team took advantage of the day off with a slalom race at nearby Snowbird. Senior Brooke Wales Granstrom finished second in a time of 1:31.53, just three-hundredths of a second behind the leader, Denver's Kristine Haugen. Junior Thea Grosvold was two spots back in fourth place in 1:31.99 and senior Shane McLean gave the Buffs three in the top eight in her time of 1:32.76.
Jessica Honkonen finished 11th in 1:33.12 while Danielle Brownell-Patty was 18th. Junior Clare Wise gave the Buffs six of the top 20 finsihers, taking 20th in a time of 1:35.55. Sophomore Katie Hostetler didn't finish the race.
HAJKOVA, ROSE AND GELSO EARN TOP 10s AT CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALS
It was a great day for former Buffs in Houghton, Mich., at the 2015 U.S. Cross Country National Championships, with Eliska Hajkova finishing third in the 20K Classical race in a time of 1:10:50.9, just eight seconds behind the race winner Rosie Brennan. Mary Rose also brought home a top 10, taking seventh in 1:12.23.0 while Joanne Reid finished 14th in 1:13.24.2.
Current Buffs Jesse Knori finished 38th in 1:18:11.9 while Lucy Newman was 45th in 1:19:52.0.
On the men's side, former Buff Matt Gelso was in the hunt for most of the race and ended up finishing seventh in in the 30K Classical race in a time of 1:31:28.8.
Sophomore Jackson Hill finished 34th in a time of 1:38:04.3. He was the 14th best collegian in the field and 15th best in his U20 classification. Max Scrimgeour finished 73rd in a time of 1:47:07.5. Incoming freshman Ian Boucher finished 53rd in the junior 10K classical race.
