Oregon Scores Late, Buffs Fall 1-0
October 02, 2015 | Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Colorado women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Oregon Ducks here on Friday night in its first Pac-12 Conference road match of the season.
Colorado moves to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 against conference opponents. The Ducks earned their first Pac-12 win of the season and are now 4-6-0 (1-1-0 Pac-12).
The Buffaloes and Ducks were locked in a defensive battle during the first half with each attack creating a few opportunities, but both backlines stood strong. Right out of the gate, in just the second minute, senior Emily Paxton drilled a shot off the crossbar and five minutes later senior Madi Krauser had her first shot of the match that went just wide left.
Junior Brie Hooks had one of the best looks for Colorado in the 13th minute when she took a shot from the top of the '18, but an Oregon defender was there to deflect it past the end line. The Buffs then earned a corner kick and had possession inside the box until Oregon goalkeeper Lauren Holden jumped to grab the ball and end Colorado's scoring threat.
The match remained a scoreless tie at halftime and less than five minutes into the second period, freshman Erin Greening found herself with an opportunity to put CU on the board. She worked around a defender and sent a shot toward the net, but Holden was there to make the save.
The Buffaloes continued to pressure throughout the second half, recording five shots over the final 45 minutes, but struggled to find the finishing touch they needed against a stout Oregon defense. CU looked to have taken the lead when sophomore Joss Orejel's free kick found the back of the net in the 71st minute, however the official waived off the goal after Colorado was called for a foul inside the box.
Oregon then earned a free kick at midfield in the 74th minute and capitalized. Caitlyn Wong booted the ball into the box full of defenders and Kyra Fawcett was able to connect and send it over the head of Colorado goalkeeper Kate Scheele, tallying her second goal of the season and the game-winner as the Buffs were unable to find the equalizer before time expired.
Hooks led all players with three shots and as a team, Colorado finished with a 9-8 shot advantage. Scheele was credited with two saves.
The Buffaloes will look to bounce back when they return to the pitch on Sunday, closing out their road trip against Oregon State in Corvallis at 12 p.m. MDT.
