Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision To Oregon State
October 04, 2015 | Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The University of Colorado women's soccer team faced a physical, 90-minute battle here Sunday afternoon and dropped a tough 2-0 match against Oregon State at Paul Lorenz Field.
Oregon State's Gwen Bieck scored the Beavers' first goal in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead on the Buffaloes. Bieck connected from center and was able to put it past Colorado goalkeeper Kate Scheele for her first tally of the season, assisted by Jenna Baxter and Natalie Higgins.
Scheele faced seven shots from the Beavers' attack and had five saves.
"All the credit to Oregon State," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "They came out really well and had a couple good chances early and scored a good goal."
The Buffaloes managed to put four of their 10 shots on frame, however were not able to find the equalizer before Oregon State would add one more goal with less than five minutes remaining to put the match out of reach. The Beavers' Emma Jones sent a cross to Nikki Faris, who found the back of the net at the 85:09 mark.
"At the beginning of the second half we played well, created some good chances, had some good pressure, but obviously as we had to push numbers forward we got exposed in the back with the second goal, so a disappointing result, obviously, but credit to Oregon State, over the 90 minutes they deserved the win," said Sanchez.
Colorado recorded five shots in each half and had two shots on frame early in the second period, but the Oregon State defense didn't allow many easy looks from that point forward. Beavers' goalkeeper Bella Geist finished the contest with four saves and their backline blocked three CU shots.
A trio of Buffaloes- Alex Huynh, Sarah Kinzner and Stephanie Zuniga led on offense, each recording two shots for the black and gold. Zuniga came off the bench shortly before halftime and fired back-to-back shots moments after entering. In the 40th minute, she had her first shot attempt blocked and then in the 44th minute she put a shot on frame, but Geist made the stop.
Sunday's contest marked only the second time this season the Buffaloes surrendered more than two goals, and the first in over a month, with the previous time coming against then-No. 11 BYU back on Aug. 28, also on the road.
The Buffaloes fell to 7-4-1 (1-2-0 Pac-12) on the season and are now 2-3 all-time in five meetings against their Pac-12 foe. Oregon State moved to 5-3-3 (1-2-0 Pac-12).
"We told them, going on the road in the Pac-12, every single result for every team is difficult," said Sanchez. "We have to move on, learn from this and we need to get results at home next weekend. We're going to have a hard week of practice and get ready for Washington."
Colorado will look to snap its two-game skid, its longest of the season, when the team returns to Boulder to host Washington and Washington State. The Buffs welcome the Huskies to Prentup Field on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. MDT, which will also be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Fans arriving early will receive free pink CU soccer shoe laces in an effort to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Sunday, Oct. 11, Colorado faces Washington State at 1 p.m. MDT. Ralphie will be in attendance for a photo opportunity with fans and is set for a run prior to kickoff.
