Early Deficit Costs Buffs At No. 24 USC

October 25, 2015 | Soccer

LOS ANGELES - The University of Colorado soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 24 Southern California on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Buffs dug themselves an early hole, allowing a pair of goals in the first 23 minutes. Savannah Levin headed in a cross from Mandy Freeman in the ninth minute for the first goal.

"We didn't track the runners, not just the first runner, but the second runner too. It was disappointing getting down 1-0 early," head coach Danny Sanchez said of the early deficit.

Following a foul that was called on the Buffs at the endline inside the box, Morgan Andrews converted the penalty kick in the 23rd minute to put the Trojans up 2-0.

Colorado settled down quickly after a number of substitutions and controlled the pace for much of the final 20 minutes of the first half.

"We had an opportunity to get a lot of players in today," Sanchez said of the strong play of the reserves. "Several of them did a real nice job. Brooklyn Varnadore and Alex Vidger did well in the midfield and in the back. Nikki Machalek did some good things on the attack."

The momentum from the first half did not carry over, however, as Andrews scored her second goal of the game, heading in a corner kick in the 51st minute to give USC a 3-0 lead.

"I was disappointed in the early corner in the second half. It was a really good header, but we didn't defend it well," Sanchez said.

Kate Scheele, who took over at goalkeeper to start the second half, prevented USC from scoring a fourth goal in the 60th minute, jumping up to punch a ball over the crossbar on a header following a corner kick. Scheele made five saves in the second half.

Danica Evans and Brie Hooks led CU with three shots each in the game.

The Buffs fall to 7-8-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the Pac-12, while USC improves to 12-4-1 and 7-1-0 in the Pac-12.

CU will return to Boulder for its final home matches of the season next weekend. The Buffs will host Arizona at 3 p.m. on Friday at Prentup Field and Arizona State at 2 p.m. on Sunday. On Friday, kids 12-and-under can wear their Halloween costumes to the match to win prizes and receive a CU soccer trick-or-treat bag. On Sunday, fans arriving early will receive an autographed senior poster and a $1 concessions coupon as part of Senior Day.

"Arizona is a top-20 RPI team and has had a lot of success," Sanchez said as the team looks ahead to next weekend. "Arizona State struggled early, but has turned it on of late as they got healthy. With it being our last home weekend, we want to play hard for these seniors."
