Cierra Simpson Named Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Week

BOULDER — University of Colorado junior Cierra Simpson was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Buffaloes to a weekend road sweep of the Oregon Pac-12 schools.
Simpson averaged an impressive 5.38 digs per set in the two victories, which included a career-high 29 digs on Friday night against No. 22 Oregon. The Buffs were down 2-0 in the match, when they rallied back to win 3-2 for their first win ever in Eugene, Ore. Simpson was served at 26 times in the match and committed just one reception error.
In the match against Oregon State on Sunday afternoon, Simpson recorded 14 digs in the three-set win. She received serve 15 times and did not make a single error while adding seven assists.
“This is a well-deserved honor for CeCe, she has been working very hard and it's good to see her efforts recognized,” head coach Liz Kritza said. “She takes her role very seriously and continually seeks self-improvement so she can better contribute to the team goals.”
This is the second Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for the Buffaloes this season. Sophomore Gabby Simpson was named the league's offensive player of the week on Sept. 21.
The Buffs open the Pac-12 home schedule on Friday, Oct. 9, against top-ranked USC. The match is set for an 8 p.m. start and will be televised on Pac-12 Network. The contest is also the annual Dig Pink Match. Breast cancer survivors and their families will be honored at the match and can receive complimentary tickets by visiting CUBuffs.com/pink. Early arriving fans will also receive a free Pink CU Giveaway item. Fans who wear pink will receive $3 admission at the Coors Events Center on the day of the match.
