Buffs Trio Has Solid Day At Ron Moore Intercollegiate

October 09, 2015 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH –The University of Colorado women's golf team sent three individuals to the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate with the first round action taking place Friday here at Highlands Ranch Golf Course.

Senior Jamie Oleksiew is joined by freshmen Lauryn Keating and Gillian Vance at the tournament and the three all shot within two strokes of each other on the par 72, 6,326-yard course.

“Our players had a pretty solid day,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “I think it's great experience for the freshmen and then it was really nice to see Jamie make a bunch of birdies.”

Oleksiew is in 20th position, starting on No. 10 and after going 2-over through four, she caught fire and rattled off four birdies in the next five holes to finish the back nine of the course at 1-under par.  After making the turn, she bogeyed No. 2 to get to even par and after a bogey on No. 5, she was 1-over par.  She was able to birdie her final hole to get back to even-par.

Keating started on No. 1 and after a bogey on No. 1, she immediately came back to par on No. 2 with a birdie and then after a birdie on No. 6, she was briefly under par.  She had an unfortunate triple-bogey on the par 4, No. 7 to go to 2-over par, but it didn't faze her as she rattled off five straight pars and then a pair of birdies on Nos. 13-14 to get back to even-par.  She finished her round with two pars and a bogey on No. 18 to sit at 1-over and is tied for 27th.

“Lauryn played pretty well,” said Kelly. “She fought her way back after the triple-bogey, which was good. Unfortunately she bogeyed the last hole and she was disappointed with that, but otherwise had a pretty solid round.”

Vance is 2-over par and tied for 37th.  She began her round with three straight pars, then had a rough stretch of three consecutive bogeys to sit at 3-over par through six holes.  She responded with two birdies and five pars in the next seven holes making the turn to get back to 1-over.  After two bogeys on Nos. 14-15, she closed her round on a high note with a birdie to get back to 2-over par.

“Gillian also had a good round,” added Kelly. “She ran into a stretch of birdies, but then fought her way back as well.”

For Oleksiew, it was her first round of her senior season and it marks her ninth even par round in her career, matching her career best. It's her best round in relation to par since her sophomore season in the second round of the 2014 Pac-12 Championships when she also shot even par.

Keating and Vance are both playing in their second career event.  Keating had the best round of her young collegiate career and Vance matched her best round. Earlier this fall, Keating played as an individual in the Minnesota Invitational and Vance competed individually at the East-West Match Play Challenge.

The trio continues at the Ron Moore over the weekend with the second round taking place Saturday and the third round Sunday.  The is Colorado's second-to-final event of the fall, as the Buffs and all other Pac-12 teams will travel to Hilo, Hawai'i, for the Pac-12 Preview on Nov. 2-3.
