Women Golfers Finish Second Day At Ron Moore Intercollegiate
October 10, 2015 | Women's Golf
HIGHLANDS RANCH – Three University of Colorado women golfers continued to play well here Saturday in the second round of the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate, held at the par 72, 6,326-yard Highlands Ranch Golf Course.
Senior Jamie Oleksiew and freshman Gillian Vance each shot even-par and freshman Lauryn Keating carded a 4-over par round.
Among the nine golfers playing only as individuals in the tournament, the Buffaloes own three of the top five scores after two rounds.
“The girls had some pretty solid rounds again,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “I think the course played tougher today because of the hole locations, they were a little harder, but overall another good day.”
Oleksiew is even-par (144) for the tournament after posting her second consecutive round of 72 and has climbed into a tie for 13th place overall, moving up six spots from Friday. Oleksiew opened with four straight pars and then went 1-over with a bogey on the par 3, No. 5. She responded with a trio of pars followed by her first birdie of the day to get back to even-par before making the turn. Once on the back side, Oleksiew ran into some trouble on the 10th hole with a double-bogey to put her at 2-over. She again responded, paring the next three and then drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15 to return to even-par. She finished strong with three straight pars. Oleksiew has recorded eight birdies and 21 pars through 36 holes of play.
“Jamie played well,” Kelly said. “I know she wasn't real happy with her ball striking on the front nine, but got it going on the back. Unfortunately she had a double on No. 10, but fought her way back with some birdies.”
Vance recorded a career best 72 on the second day, finishing with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars. She teed-off from hole No. 1 and started fast, sinking a birdie to go to 1-under par. After two straight pars, she dropped back to even with a bogey on the fourth hole. Vance would remain even until No. 8 when she had another bogey, but immediately earned the stroke back with a birdie on No. 9 to close out the front side. Vance had back-to-back pars on Nos. 10-11 followed by a bogey on No. 12 to move to 1-over, but she rebounded nicely, tallying a birdie on the very next hole and finishing then with five straight pars. Vance entered Saturday in 37th place and is now tied for 24th at 2-over par for the tournament.
“Gillian had a very solid round, she really had a lot of birdie tries that just kind of rimmed the edge of the hole, but even-par is a good round,” Kelly added.
Keating shot a 76 or 4-over par in the second round and is tied for 38th in the standings. She, too had a strong start, paring four straight and got to 1-under with a birdie on No. 5. Two holes later, she hit a rough patch with a double-bogey on the par 4, No. 7 and went on to post 1-over after nine holes complete. The backside was challenging for Keating on Saturday, she shot 3-over par. She recorded a pair of pars on Nos. 9-10 and had a pair of bogeys on Nos. 12-13, bringing her to 3-over with five to play. She finished with one bogey and four pars over the last five holes and is 5-over (149) in the event.
“Lauryn is working on some things in her swing, making some adjustments and she's doing well with them—it just takes some time to make the changes,” said Kelly. “Unfortunately, that seventh hole has given her some trouble this weekend, so hopefully she'll birdie that one tomorrow.”
The Buff trio will play the third and final round on Sunday with a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. MDT.
