Buffs Finish Final Round At Ron Moore Intercollegiate
October 11, 2015 | Women's Golf
HIGHLANDS RANCH – The University of Colorado women golfers competing in the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate faced faster greens and windy conditions here Sunday as the trio finished play at Highlands Ranch Golf Course.
Senior Jamie Oleksiew and freshmen Lauryn Keating and Gillian Vance all finished within four shots of each other. Oleksiew led the way, carding a 4-over par (72-72-76—220) final scorecard. Keating wrapped up the second event of her young career, 1-stroke behind her fellow teammate at 5-over (73-76-72—221) and Vance recorded a 74-72-78—224 or 8-over par mark.
“The greens were registering at 12.5 on the stimpmeter, which is a fast green,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “The grounds crew didn't water them last night so I think they wanted to toughen-up the course, which they did today. Then over our last nine holes, the winds increased—I would say to probably about 20 mph.”
Oleksiew shot 4-over, 76 in the final round and tied for 22nd overall in the standings. She teed-off from No. 17 on Sunday, paring her first hole before running into some trouble on Nos. 1-2 when she had a pair of bogeys to move to 2-over. Three holes later, she went to 3-over with a bogey, but then two birdies over her next three brought her back to 1-over. Making the turn, Oleksiew moved to 3-over again with a double-bogey on No. 10 and she bogeyed No. 12 to push her to 4-over. Despite a challenging few holes coming in, Oleksiew managed to par the final four.
“Jamie didn't play her best today,” said Kelly. “She was disappointed with her score today, but overall she made good improvement from the start of her year, which is nice to see.”
Keating recorded her best round on the final day, shooting an even-par, 72. She started on the 18th-hole and enjoyed a fast start, moving to 2-under par through five holes with a combination of three pars and two birdies. She had a bogey on No. 5 to move to 1-under, but responded with a birdie on the following hole, returning to 2-under. She was challenged on Nos. 2-8 with two straight bogeys to move to even-par, but settled down, rattling off three straight pars. Keating went to 1-over with a bogey on her 13th hole, and then finished strong with four consecutive pars and she drained a birdie on her final hole to get back to even for the afternoon. Keating finished tied for 25th on the par 72, 6,326-yard course.
“Lauryn had a very solid, even-par round,” Kelly said. “I think under today's conditions that was quite good and she played pretty well overall for the tournament.”
Vance's round was up and down as she finished the final 18 holes at 6-over par. She bogeyed her first hole to go 1-over and then played even through the next six. A bogey and double-bogey on Nos. 7-8 brought her to 4-over. Over the next five holes, she made three pars and had a pair of bogeys to move to 6-over. Vance followed with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15 to earn back two of those strokes, but then had a tough finish with two bogeys. Vance placed tied for 37th in her second tournament of her young career.
“Gillian had a rough day, unfortunately, but that is not to take away from her first two rounds,” said Kelly. “I saw a lot of good things from her and it was good experience for both freshmen.”
The team returns to the links in three weeks for its final tournament of the fall season—the Pac-12 Preview in Hilo, Hawai'i, Nov. 2-3.
