Women's Golf Tied For Sixth At Pac-12 Preview

November 02, 2015 | Women's Golf

KONA, Hawai'i – The University of Colorado women's golf team is tied for sixth after two rounds here at the Pac-12 Preview, the Buffaloes' final tournament of the fall season.

As a group, the Buffaloes shot 301-303—604 or 20-over par and was one of only two squads in the 10-team field, which includes five ranked in the top 20 to record a pair of eagles.

No. 3 UCLA and No. 15 Arizona State are tied for first, both carding a 593 or 9-over par team score at Nanea Golf Club, a par 73, 6,372-yard course format. Washington holds the third spot on the leaderboard, three strokes back while Arizona is in fourth and California rounds out the top four at 14 and 16-over, respectively.

“Overall, we are really close,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “We need to clean up a few misses and a few three-putts. It's a little frustrating because we really are capable of playing much better than we are, but we throw away a few shots here and there that really hurt us. You're going to have mistakes and missed shots and all, but if we can eliminate the easy mistakes I think we're really going to be in good shape.”

Junior Esther Lee paced the Buffs with a 149 or 3-over par through the first 56 holes. She shot 2-over par in the first round, highlighted by an eagle on her second hole and then was one stroke better at plus-1 the next time out. In the second round, Lee tallied five birdies and eight pars. She started with a birdie on the first hole to go to 1-under and followed with a double-bogey on No. 2 to go to 1-over. A birdie on the next hole moved her back to even-par where she would remain until running into some trouble on Nos. 7-10, bogeying three of the four holes. Lee had another bogey on No. 13 that put her at 4-over, but made a charge at the end, draining three birdies on the final four holes to finish at 1-over. Lee is tied for 13th place on the leaderboard.

One stroke behind Lee is sophomore Brittany Fan. The Hawaii native is 4-over par, posting a 76-74—150 total. She combined to shoot 2-under par on the front side. In the first round, she was even-par and then in round two, she shot 2-under with two birdies on Nos. 1-9. The backside presented more of a challenge as she was 3-over each time on Nos. 10-18 on the day. In total, Fan recorded three birdies, 27 pars, five bogeys and one double-bogey. Her strong second round propelled her eight spots and is tied for 17th overall.

Junior Natalie Vivaldi is tied for 26th after carding a 7-over par, 153 on Monday. Vivaldi recorded her first career hole-in-one in the first round on the par 3, 17th hole. She entered the second round at even-par and then shot 7-over her second time on the course. Vivaldi began the afternoon paring the first three holes and then moved to 1-over with a bogey on her fourth, but earned the stroke back with a birdie on the following hole. She bogeyed No. 10 to go to 1-over once again and then was 3-over with five holes to play. A birdie on No. 18 dropped her down to 2-over, but she had a couple tough breaks heading in where she was plus-5 through the final four holes.

Freshman Gillian Vance, who is playing in her first tournament in which her score will contribute to the overall team scorecard is 8-over par (154) with a pair of 77's. Vance made two birdies in the first round and then added three more in the second round. In all, she also recorded 19 pars. She will head into the final round, sitting in a tie for 31st overall.

Senior Alexis Keating finished the day at 9-over par (77-78—155) and is tied for 35th place. Keating went 4-over par in the first round and followed with a 5-over par scorecard in the second. In the afternoon, she had a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Through nine holes, she was 2-over par. A bogey on her 10th hole put her at 3-over before a birdie on her 11th to go back to 2-over. A par on the next hole followed by two straight bogeys moved her to plus-5. She then had a trio of pars and a bogey on her final hole to conclude the second round at 5-over.

Playing as an individual is senior Jamie Oleksiew, who is 12-over par (83-75—158) and tied for 41st place. She made quite the improvement in the second round, improving by eight strokes. She finished with three birdies and 23 pars.

Washington's Charlotte Thomas holds the top spot on the leaderboard at 7-under par, a six stroke lead over Caroline Inglis who is 1-under and in second place. A trio of players are tied for third at even-par.

The final round gets underway Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. MT (7:30 a.m. HT) with a shotgun start. The Buffaloes will tee-off from Nos. 6-10 and play alongside California and Washington State.
