November 03, 2015 | Women's Golf
KONA, Hawai'i – The University of Colorado women's golf team posted the third best team score here Tuesday in the final round of the Pac-12 Preview, propelling the Buffaloes to a fourth place finish.
Colorado, the only team to climb multiple spots on the leaderboard on the last day, turned in a 1-under par, 291 scorecard and was one of only four teams to post a subpar final round. The Buffs shot 895 or 19-over par for the tournament held at the par 73, 6,372-yard Nanea Golf Club.
“The team played really well today and I am so happy and proud of them,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “The thing I liked is everybody really finished their round strong. It was a real team effort this week with everybody contributing and it definitely shows that their hard work and dedication is starting to pay off.”
The third-ranked UCLA Bruins won the event with an 877 or 1-over par final mark and Arizona State took second place, finishing seven strokes back at 8-over par (884). Ahead of the Buffs in third place was Arizona, posting a 12-over par team score and Washington rounded out the top five at 20-over par.
Sophomore Brittany Fan and junior Esther Lee both finished at 3-over par (222) and tied for 12th overall. For Fan, who shot 1-under par in the final round, making 15 pars, a pair of birdies and only bogey, it was her best 56-hole performance of the fall season and earned her fourth top 15 finish of her career. Lee turned in an even-par 73 round with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars. She finishes the fall with four top 15 performances in all four events.
Senior Alexis Keating turned in Colorado's best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 3-under 70 and finished with a 6-over par (77-78-70) 225 scorecard. Her final round began on the backside, No. 10 and after a bogey on her second hole to go to 1-over, she drained back-to-back birdies to go to 1-under. She went back to 1-over, bogeying two of her next three, however quickly responded again with a birdie on No. 17 to move to even-par. With 10 holes left, Keating finished strong, tallying seven pars and a trio of birdies. Her impressive final round helped her zoom 16 spots up the leaderboard and finish tied for 19th overall.
Junior Natalie Vivaldi posted a 3-over par, 76 during the last round and finished tied for 29th with a 10-over par (73-80-76—229) score over the 56 holes. She was consistent throughout much of the day, recording 15 pars and just three bogeys. Vivaldi played the front side at 2-over and was 1-over on the back nine.
Freshman Gillian Vance recorded her third straight round of 77 to finish 12-over (231) for the tournament. Her day started with four bogeys over her first 10 holes, but she settled down, making two birdies to offset a double-bogey through her last eight holes and post an even-score on the front side. Vance finished tied for 34th place.
Senior Jamie Oleksiew played as an individual and carded an 18-over par, 237 (83-75-79) final score. She finished 44th overall and tallied a total of four birdies and pared 35 holes.
“It's a nice way to finish the fall and it gives everybody things to work on during the offseason so we can get ready for the spring,” added Kelly. “I think they can see how close we are to being an elite team.”
Washington's Charlotte Thomas held onto her lead from Monday to earn medalist honors at 7-under par. Linnea Strom from Arizona State was the runner-up at 4-under par, Oregon's Caroline Inglis finished third at 2-under while four players all tied for fourth, shooting even-par.
Colorado returns to the links on Feb. 13 when the team begins spring play at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
