Buffs Roll In San Diego, Ormeno Ruiz Falls At NIIC

FLUSHING, N.Y./SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Nuria Ormeño Ruiz continued her run at the ITA/USTA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Friday, while the rest of the team began competition at the San Diego State Invitational.
Ormeño Ruiz was facing 72nd-ranked Caroline Brinson from Georgia at the national indoor tournament. After earning a dominating first-set victory, Ormeño Ruiz fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 as she missed a chance for a win over a top-100 opponent.
All three of the team's four singles players competing in San Diego won their matches on Friday.
Tina Bokhua had a big day for the Buffs, pairing with Annabelle Andrinopoulos for a 6-4 doubles win over Sarah Gong and Stephanie Hazell from UC Irvine in the morning. Bokhua then breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over UCI's Arisha Ladhani in singles competition.
Kyra Wojcik and Vitaliya Alkhovik also won their singles matches, both rallying after dropping the first set. Wojcik defeated UCI's Mazy Watrous 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Alkhovik won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Alex Harrigan, also from UCI.
"Overall we started a little up and down in the doubles however we made a great run in the singles," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "To have both Kyra and Vita to lose the first set but then to come back and win in three is a good thing. They both made adjustments and saw the fruits of their labor. Tomorrow we will have the same format so will look to regroup and get ready to go at it again."
Play will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. PST in San Diego.
