Buffs Welcome Fans To Gold Crown Practice
November 06, 2015 | Women's Basketball
LAKEWOOD – The University of Colorado women's basketball team wrapped up its final preseason event on Thursday evening, holding an open practice at Gold Crown Fieldhouse.
The Buffaloes practiced in front of crowd of more than 250 people, varying in all ages from elementary schoolers to high school students as they got an up close and personal look at how the team prepares during the preseason.
“It's really fun to play here,” said junior guard Lauren Huggins. “It gives us a change of scenery, a new atmosphere. It helps get us ready for a game because you have all of these fans cheering for you. At the beginning we had a little bit of nerves and after that we settled in and I hope inspired some of these high school kids to continue to work hard and purse their dreams of wanting to play basketball in college.”
The team started with some drills and then moved into work specific to each position on the floor before finishing with a couple five-on-five games. Before practice got underway, head coach Linda Lappe introduced the 2015-16 Buffaloes and also explained some key areas the team has been working on throughout the fall, emphasizing communication and defense.
“Being from Colorado, I think my favorite thing is being able to share this experience with other Colorado high school teams,” added Huggins. “I wish we would have done this when I was in high school. It gives the coaches an opportunity to maybe pick up a few new drills and implement kind of what we do in practice into theirs, especially since they are beginning to have try outs and start their season. Just to share this with the community is the coolest part.”
After the event, fans were able to interact with the team and coaching staff. Many of them took photos with the team and student-athletes signed autographs.
The Buffaloes will play an exhibition game against USC-Aiken on Saturday, Nov. 7 (7 p.m.) at Coors Events Center. Then tip off of the 2015-16 season is slated for Saturday, Nov. 14 (2 p.m.) in Boulder against Loyola Marymount.
