Kelly Adds Australian Duo To 2016 Women's Golf Team
December 01, 2015 | Women's Golf
BOULDER – University of Colorado women's golf coach Anne Kelly has announced the signing of two student-athletes who will continue their education and play golf for the University of Colorado, beginning in the fall of 2016.
Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins, both Queensland, Australia natives, signed National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period and will help contribute to a Buffs team that graduates four of its golfers in the spring.
“We are thrilled about adding these two players and feel very fortunate both players chose the University of Colorado for their collegiate career,” said Kelly. “Kirsty and Robyn have a lot of experience in competitive tournaments and being a member of a team. They both represent the Queensland team, which should help them in the transition to collegiate golf. They are excellent golfers, hard workers and will be great representatives for our program and university.”
Hodgkins is from Kippa-Ring, Queensland and graduated in November from Redcliffe State High School where she played three years (2013-15) for the Queensland Junior Girls State Team and helped guide them to a championship during the 2013 season. Hodgkins was a three-time state and regional team selection and was named Redcliffe State's Sportswoman of the Year during her prep career. She shot the best round of her career in the Queensland Women's Amateur, carding a 66 (-6) at Palm Meadows Golf Club in Gold Coast. Hodgkins holds a handful of top five finishes, which is highlighted by two top place finishes at the 2014 and 2015 Queensland School Girls Championships.
Kelly on Hodgkins: “I remember getting an email about Kirsty back in the spring of 2014 and was very impressed with her resume and swing video. I had the opportunity to watch her last December in Australia and despite a bad reaction to an insect bite and athletic tape, that made her ankle swell up incredibly big, she played the tournament and played well. That showed me a lot right there about her competitiveness and passion to play. I think Kirsty will be a great fit for CU because she is very good academically, plus she is a highly talented golfer with potential and desire to become even better!”
Choi, hails from Gold Coast, Queensland and earned her high school diploma from Benowa State last month. She has won several amateur tournaments, including the 2014 Adam Scott Classic and most recently the 2015 Katherine Kirk Classic along with the QLD Amateur State Championship earlier this fall where she drained five birdies over her last six holes to take home the title in the match-play event. Choi has also played alongside Hodgkins on multiple Queensland teams. She owns a 71.25 stroke average and recorded her best career round, 67 (-5) at Palm Meadows. Choi is currently No. 145 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and ninth in the national Australian Amateur Rankings.
Kelly on Choi: “I had the chance to briefly watch Robyn in the same event as Kirsty in Australia. My thought was wow this player has a good swing, but must be having a tough event because her scores were a little off. In speaking with Kirsty she highly recommended Robyn and from talking to Robyn, watching her results and swing videos I believe she is going to be a great college player as well. Her results over the last few months have been quite good and she is excited about the opportunity to come to the University of Colorado. Robyn also excels in the classroom and will be a tremendous addition to our team.”
