December 15, 2015 | Track and Field
BOULDER - Abrianna Torres (track and field) and George King (men's basketball) earned this week's Athlete of the Week honors after they both set new personal bests in their sports.
Torres defended her pentathlon title at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Classic and Open on Thursday at Steinhauer Fieldhouse, finishing first with a total score of 3,860. She started her day running the 60-meter hurdles and finished first with a time of 8.89 seconds, just missing her personal record of 8.88. In the high jump, Torres set a new personal best at 5-6 (her previous best was 5-5.75) while finishing second overall. Torres's Thursday win in the pentathlon was the third in the NCAA.
On Friday, she followed up her first win by recording a mark of 19-2.50 in the open long jump, which gave her a third place finish.
King played a solid defense on All-America point guard candidate Kyle Collinsworth on Saturday night against BYU. King had a game high 23 points in just 25 minutes of play, his second-best career scoring performance and second 20-point game of his career. He matched career-highs with four three-pointers, and seven free throws made. His field goal and three-point shooting percentages were also personal bests.
Also nominated for this week's honors: Jamee Swan (women's basketball) and Andrew Ghizzone (track and field).
Swan turned in two solid performances last week as the Buffaloes went 1-1 over their two games. She combined to score 31 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 59 percent (13-of-22) from the field. She also added four blocks and a pair of steals.
The senior forward only had two turnovers during her combined 39 minutes of play. She posted back-to-back double-digit scoring performances, recording 14 points in the Buffs 90-66 win over Northern Arizona and then had a team-leading 17 points in a tough 79-75 loss versus an undefeated Missouri squad. Swan has scored at least 10 points in eight of nine games this season.
Ghizzone finished the first day of Colorado School of Mines Alumni Classic in seventh with 2,774 points to lead the Buffs. He placed eighth in the 60-meters in 7.24 and followed up that performance with a 22-3 mark in the long jump for fifth place. In shot put he recorded a throw of 35-11.25 and finished off the evening completing the high jump with a mark of 6-0.75.
The final event of the second day was the 1,000-meter run, which Ghizzone won in 2:43.36, almost a full seven seconds ahead of the second place time of 2:49.86, set by Colorado State's Travlor Skudneski.
Ghizzone finished second in the heptathlon Friday evening and ended the two-day event with 5,262 total points, the fourth best total in CU history and the third best mark currently in the NCAA.
