Boyle's Buffs Collect More Votes In National Polls

BOULDER — Tad Boyle's Colorado Buffaloes collected more points in the national polls Monday, collecting the 29th-most points in the USA Today/Coaches' poll and the 30th-most points in the Associated Press rankings.

It's the second week in a row the Buffs received votes in both polls. Last week CU had the the 29th-most points in the AP poll and the 30th-most in the USA Today rankings. They received more total points in both polls, collecting 31 points in the USA Today rankings and 27 in the AP rankings.

The last time the Buffs were ranked in the top 25 in either poll was the week of Jan. 13-19, 2014, when they were No. 21 in the AP poll and No. 22 in the USA Today rankings. The Buffs were 14-3 at the time, but lost Spencer Dinwiddie to a season-ending knee injury the day before the poll came out and did not appear again in the polls the rest of the season. CU went 9-9 after Dinwiddie's injury and lost to Pitt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

But while the Buffs received more points in the polls, they actually dropped in the national RPI, as their two home wins over lower-ranked squads didn't impress the computers. After checking in at No. 15 a week ago in the official NCAA RPI, Colorado was at No. 32 on Monday morning. Three Pac-12 teams — Utah (20), Oregon State (21) and USC (28) — were ranked ahead of CU.

All told, 11 Pac-12 teams were in the top 100. The rest of the list included Arizona State and Oregon tied at No. 39, followed by Arizona (52), UCLA (54), Cal (79), Stanford (88), Washington (91) and Washington State (216).

CU was also No. 32 in the CBS Sports RPI, No. 44 in the Pomeroy ratings and No. 30 in the ESPN RPI.

The Buffs will have a chance this week to make a significant jump in the polls and the RPI rankings. If they win Tuesday night against Penn State and as expected play SMU on Wednesday, it will be an opportunity to impress the computers and the pollsters. SMU was ranked No. 16 in the NCAA RPI on Monday and was 18th in the latest AP poll. SMU is not included in the coaches' poll because the Mustangs are on NCAA probation this year and have been banned from postseason play.

The Buffs will play two games in Las Vegas this week, then begin Pac-12 play next week with games at Cal (Jan. 1) and Stanford (Jan. 3).

Their next home game is Jan. 8 vs. Utah.
