Tennis Upset Saturday Night, 4-1 To Fresno State

February 28, 2015 | Tennis

BOISE,  Idaho – In a match played on a neutral court, the No. 44 nationally ranked University of Colorado women's tennis team fell 4-1 to Fresno State, Saturday night in a match played at Boise State.

The win improves Fresno State to 8-3 on the year, while the Buffaloes dropped their first match in nearly three weeks and are now to 8-2. The loss also snaps a four-match win streak. Both losses have occurred away from Boulder, the other was at then-No. 43 Wichita State.

The No. 44 national ranking is the program's highest since the 2009 spring season when CU was No. 39 nationally.

“Kudos to a very good Fresno State team, they were the better team,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We weren't able to get ahead in the match and now we have a quick-turn around and play Boise State in the morning. We'll continue to fight like we have been doing and give it a great effort.”

Junior Alex Aiello recorded the lone point with a three set winner, defeating Sofya Malysheva, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0.  The three set win for Aiello was her 14th of the year and fifth straight victory. Aiello currently has the longest winning streak in singles play for the Buffs.

Aiello also improves to 8-1 this dual season and the eight triumphs put her in a three-way tie with senior Julyette Steur and sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz for the team lead in spring match wins.

CU (8-2) dropped the doubles point falling at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots, only the second time the Buffs have missed clinching the doubles point this spring season. In singles, Steur and freshman Tina Bokhua were beaten in straight sets, as was Ormeño Ruiz at No. 3.

The Buffaloes head back to the courts Sunday at 10 a.m. to take on Boise State to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule before Pac-12 Conference play begins at No. 8 California on March 6.
