BOISE, Idaho – The University of Colorado women's tennis team rebounded less than 24 hours later and returned the winners circle, defeating host Boise State, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
The Buffaloes improve to 9-2 overall on the season and close the non-conference portion of their schedule and turn their attention to Pac-12 Conference play at No. 8 California this Friday, March 6.
CU avenged last season's meeting on Sunday against the Broncos, a 4-3 home loss with a win at Boise for the first time since 1996. The Buffs pushed ahead in the all-time series, 6-4.
“(I'm) really proud how the way we came out, fought and competed really hard,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “In doubles, we had our opportunities and didn't convert, but we turned around in singles and competed; we stood strong when times were tight.”
Colorado failed to achieve the doubles point for the third straight match, losing two of three points to the home team.
The No. 1 team of senior Julyette Steur and freshman Tina Bokhua earned the win taking a 6-3 decision. It was their sixth victory in nine matches.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, Bokhua evened the team score at one with a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Megan LaLone. It was Bokhua's 11th victory of the year, seventh of the spring.
The Buffs surged ahead minutes later as sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz defeated Bobbi Oshiro, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot to pick up her 13th win of the year and an impressive ninth spring victory. Eight of Ormeño Ruiz's nine wins this dual season have occurred in straight sets.
The visitors made it 3-1 when freshman Kyra Wojcik took a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5, defeating Ari Paules Aldrey. It was Wojcik's eighth win of the year, fifth of the spring.
Junior Alexandra Aiello then clinched the team win for the first time this season with CU's fourth straight set match win, a 6-3, 7-5 win over Milena Toseva. Aiello also won yesterday in straight sets to improve her individual singles record to a team best ninth win in the spring, 15th for the year. It was also Aiello's sixth straight victory.
“We had a good weekend of competition and played a really good team in Fresno State last night, and for us to turn around and play a solid team like Boise State on their home courts, is always huge; it was good to get the win today.”
The Broncos (4-6) season is a tale of two different seasons, having started the spring winning four of five matches, now have lost six straight.
Colorado continues on the road next week opening Pac-12 play at No. 8 Cal (Friday, March 6) and No. 7 Stanford (Saturday, March 7).
