WICHITA, Kan. – It was business as usual for the University of Colorado women's tennis team as they returned to the winners circle Saturday afternoon, shutting out the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos, 7-0 in a neutral court match played at the Wichita Country Club.
The Buffaloes (5-1) rebounded with their fourth shutout of the season after falling for the first time Friday to the host Shockers, the No. 43 ranked team in the nation, 5-2. It was the first meeting ever between the Buffs and Kangaroos (2-4).
On Saturday, the Buffs won the doubles point – for the sixth consecutive time, then took all six singles positions, three of them in straight sets.
CU had little trouble in the doubles competition as sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and freshman Vitaliya Alkhovik teamed up for the first time this season as a tandem with a 6-1 win at No. 3. The visitors clinched the point at No. 1 as senior Julyette Steur and freshman Tina Bokhua took a 6-2 winner for their fourth win in six matches.
“I'm happy with the way we rebounded from Friday's loss,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We worked through the challenges that we faced today, and that's a good sign. Today was a great opportunity, and at the end of the day, we took care of business.”
In singles, Colorado clinched the match to four team points with three consecutive matches going two sets.
Ormeño Ruiz was the first one off the court at No. 3, shutting out Mariam Kurasbediani, 6-0, 6-0; junior Alex Aiello was next at No. 4 defeating Marina Albert, 6-1, 6-0; and Steur clinched the team win, her third of the season, getting past Maddie Schulte, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.
Ormeño Ruiz recorded her ninth win of the year; Aiello tallied her 10th and Steur, remained unbeaten in dual play this spring season at 6-0. She has also won a team-high 12 singles matches this year.
CU rounded out the scoring with three more victories, all in three sets.
Bokhua rallied from a set down defeating Dimitra Stavrianakou, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(6) for her ninth triumph of the year. It was also her first collegiate win in three matches coming back to win the match after dropping the opening set.
At No. 5, freshman Kyra Wojcik followed with the result as Bokhua, rallying from a set down to achieve victory. Wojcik defeated Raquel Argenal, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(5) for her second career third set win, and her sixth win of the year.
Rounding out the scoring was state of Kansas native, senior Ashley Tiefel, as she won her second match of the spring, getting past Amelie Amsallem, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0(5) at No. 6.
CU is idle until Sunday, February 15 when it hosts regional opponent New Mexico at 11 a.m. The match is at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.
