Colorado-Utah Post Game Quotes

February 08, 2015 | Men's Basketball

University of Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle

General
"I'd like to start by saying that you have to give Utah some credit. Those guys were really good tonight. I told our guys in the locker room that's what a top-15 team looks like. They played like it tonight; they took it to us in every single way. They made every open shot. We weren't good enough defensively; we weren't good enough offensively. It was just a good old-fashioned (butt)-whooping. We've got to take it, we've got to learn from it, we've got to get better from it, and that's what we plan to do."

On Josh Scott's Effectiveness Coming Back From Injury
"If there was one shining light tonight, it was Josh Scott; having him back in uniform, out there battling, and doing what he does. Other than that there were not many bright spots tonight."

On Team's Outlook
"I question where we our mentally. I don't question our physical ability, because I see our players in practice every day. I see how we're able to share the ball and move the ball on offense, how we shoot the ball in practice, and how we're able to guard. In the games it's like a different team. I know it's there physically; I know the skill level is there. We just didn't have anybody play well tonight. It was just one of those nights. We couldn't secure rebounds; we couldn't shoot free throws; we couldn't make open shots. Utah had a lot to do that. They're a good team."

On Team Responding
"We're not going to check out. Whether we can respond and fight, scratch, and claw and get some more wins down the stretch, I don't know. We're in league play so nothing is going to be given to this team. We have to go out and take it. Up until this point we haven't really showed a lot of resolve. During the USC game I was really proud of our guys and they're fight. When things aren't' going well, we have to figure out how to stem the tide. We haven't been able to do that. 11 situations where we didn't get it done. I didn't expect us to be 11-11 and 4-6 [in conference] and three home losses."

On Having Team Leaders In The Locker Room
"At some point, it doesn't matter if you're at the high school level or junior college level or playing in the PAC-12 conference, until your team and members of your team in the locker room say enough is enough, it's going to continue. All you can do as a coach is to try to make them better physically, skill-wise, and in practice. We're doing a lot of individual work and a lot of shooting. We're going to watch film. We're going to try everything we can try. We're talented, but we aren't going to out-talent people in the Pac-12. Everybody is talented in the PAC-12. It's how does talent work together and execute together. Tonight you saw a team execute and a team that didn't execute. That was the difference."

University of Colorado Student-Athletes

Josh Scott, Junior, Forward

General
"
Regardless of how this came, on the fact that I came back, we just didn't have it tonight. We weren't good enough defensively, offensively, and coach Boyle is going to come in here and say he didn't have us prepared but in reality, we had some long practices and long film sessions and we knew who this team was. He had us very prepared. Us as players didn't come through. So if he does try to come in and say that he didn't have us prepared, we just didn't come through as players."

On Losing By Such A Large Margin (-28)
"I think this is very surprising. I didn't think any of us thought it would turn out that way. We didn't think we'd lose at home. We're very good at home and we just didn't play well. It's embarrassing."

On His Back Injury
"It's fine. Anybody that's an athlete continues to get treatment on their back regardless of how well it feels, but I'm fine."

On Their Offensive Play Tonight
"We always try to play inside-out. Credit to [Utah], they were knocking down a lot of threes. It's tough to outscore people. It's tough to run and play fast when you're taking the ball out of the net. We didn't play solid defense. Credit to them. They played well. They put a clinic on for us."

On The Effect Of Injuries
"Coming in we said talent and injuries can hurt a team but if we're as talented as we said we are, it shouldn't matter, we should be able to compete. With all of the talent we have, we shouldn't have had an outcome like this tonight."

On Team Chemistry
"In the locker room, we're fine. Were a close knit group but it's just not translating right now for a multitude of reasons. It's not just one guy. It's the whole team. We're just not executing. It's something that we have to figure out. If you knew us off the court, you would think that that would translate on the court but it just hasn't."

On Turning Around The Season
"We have to do it. Nobody else can. I'm sure people are down on us, that's sports life and that's fine. But we believe in each other and we want to figure this out more than anybody. There's a lot of basketball to be played. There's a team three, four years ago that did it. They weren't in a good place either and if they can do it, we for sure can as well."

Dominique Collier, Freshman, Guard

General
"Coach Boyle had us prepared but this is just on us. We need to suck it up and play. They executed on defense and we didn't. That was a key in our loss today."

On The Effect Of Injuries
"Guys just have to step up. When a guy goes down, another man has to step up and that's what happened today. Askia [Booker] went down and we didn't step up on this court."

On The Buffs' Offense Today
"I think we were moving too fast, making too many quick decisions on offense and not letting the ball move and forcing them to make mistakes on defense. We were taking too many quick shots. Then on offense, when they're hitting threes, I think that brought us down going back on offense."

On How The Buffs Prepared For Tonight's Game
"It was just getting through screens and being there. We've been working on that for the past week in preparing for Utah. It's on us."

University of Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

On The Utes Shooting 59 Percent From 3-Point Range
"I thought we shot the ball really well, 20 assists, I thought we shared it (well). Three threes to start the second half without [G] Delon [Wright] on the floor."

On Askia Booker's Absence Tonight
"I think we caught a break not having to play against Booker, that was a lot of our focus this week in practice; that kid's a good player. The head of the snake for them is Askia Booker. You take a guy like that out of the line-up, we caught a break."

On Other Keys To The Victory
"The rebounding emphasis was huge and for us to out-rebound them significantly, I thought was big. We had a goal of having single digit turnovers, we had 10 in the game. We took care of the ball and rebounded, we'll be in a lot of games that way."

On Utah's Defense
"Defense is what won the ball game for us, we really guarded well. We limited them to one shot which was the key, and that's the way you win games, it's built around our defense."

On Winning His First Game In Boulder
"I wouldn't go too far, it's a one game deal. There's no doubt we caught Colorado at a good time without Booker. We've had five road games and won three of them, if you want to reach your goals you have to defend your home court and win some games on the road."
