“Not a great start for the team at this event today,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “There were some pretty strong winds and it's a tough course. I think the team got a good feel for the course and will play better tomorrow. We seemed to struggle around the greens, which are undulating and challenging, but the girls are pretty determined to make a comeback in the second round.”
Recording the best round for the Buffs on Friday was sophomore Esther Lee who finished with a 4-over par, 76 and is tied for 18th overall. The front nine proved to be more challenging for Lee. She had three bogeys on Nos. 4, 7 and 8 and was 3-over before making the turn. The Los Alamitos, Calif. native was 4-over after 10 holes then she settled down, paring the next two, which was followed by back-to-back birdies to bring her back to 2-over. Lee moved to 4-over again when she double-bogeyed No. 16 and finished with three straight pars.
Junior Jamie Oleksiew is tied for 35th place, posting a 79. She opened with a bogey on the first hole and a birdie on No. 4 put her back at even par, but then recorded a bogey and double-bogey in two of her final three holes on the front. Oleksiew was 3-over starting the back nine where she had two bogeys, one double-bogey and six pars, bringing her to 7-over par to finish the afternoon.
Junior Alexis Keating wrapped up her round with an 8-over par, 80. She began her day shooting 4-over par through just three holes, recording two straight bogeys and then a double. Keating dropped back down to 3-over with her only birdie of the round on No. 4. Two holes later, she fell to 5-over with back-to-back bogeys, Once reaching the back-nine, she was two strokes better at 3-over par. She bogeyed three holes, but pared six. Keating is tied for 48th heading into Saturday.
Freshman Brittany Fan and sophomore Natalie Vivaldi are one stroke behind Keating and tied for 61st place. They each shot a 9-over par 81. Fan was 6-over on the front nine and 3-over on the back. Vivaldi's scorecard was just the opposite, having an easier time on the front, recording a 3-over par and then was 6-over on the final nine holes.
Playing as an individual is redshirt freshman Tori Glenn. She carded an 88 or 16-over par in her first tournament this spring and is tied for 86th overall. Glenn started on No. 10 and shot a 43 through on the back nine holes and then recorded a 45 on the front side.
A trio of players is tied at the top of the leaderboard. TCU's Kelly McGovern, Hannah Wood from Oklahoma and North Carolina's Leslie Cloots each recorded an even-round, 72. There is also a three-way tie for fourth place. Chieh Jessica Peng from Mississippi State, Elyse Smidinger playing for Denver and LSU's Madelene Sagstrom are one stroke behind first at 1-over par.
