BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Colorado women's golf team closed out its spring break with a strong showing at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, finishing in sixth place here Sunday.
Tournament host and sixth-ranked LSU won its own event with an 879 team score. Mississippi State placed second, five strokes back at 20-over par (884). TCU climbed one spot to finish in third, shooting an 895, two strokes ahead of fourth place finisher Tulane. Wake Forest used a 293 final round score to move up four spots and claim fifth.
The Buffaloes, who were playing their seventh round of golf in seven days, shot a final round 15-over par 303 and finished at 46-over par 910 (316-291-303) for the event, held at the 6,251 yard, par 72 University Club.
“It was a tough day, the greens were faster and the course was a little more dried out so it was playing hard and fast,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “We got off to a pretty decent start. We had a little trouble on our back nine, but overall I think they did a really good job.”
Sophomore Esther Lee finished tied for 10th with a 76-71-74—221 or 5-over par. It is Lee's seventh top 10 finish this year. She shot a 2-over par in the final round and had two birdies. Lee was 1-under after 10 holes, but then went 1-over with two bogeys over the next three holes. She dropped back to even par with a birdie two holes later and followed with a par, double-bogey and par to close out her round.
“It's unfortunate, Esther got a really bad kick on her second to last hole on No. 2,” said Kelly. “She hit a great drive and it took a hard bounce right into a little palm tree. She had to take an unplayable ball and ended up with a double on that hole.”
Freshman Brittany Fan carded an even-par 72 on Sunday and finished with a 223 for the tournament. Fan pared every hole on the front nine and paired two bogeys with two birdies on the back nine to even out her round. She tied for 14th place overall, which ties her best finish of the season and marks her fifth top 20 finish of her career.
Junior Alexis Keating struggled with her putter a lot of the day, according to Kelly. She got off to a rough start with a triple-bogey on the par 3, No. 5 then earned one stroke back with a birdie on the next hole to go 2-over. She would record three bogeys on holes 8 through 11 to put her at 5-over par and then settled a bit for five straight pars and a birdie, but had a double-bogey and two bogeys before finishing the round at 8-over par. She posted an 80-72-80—232 or 16-over in the event and tied for 36th overall.
Junior Jamie Oleksiew wrapped up the tournament with a 6-over par, 78 for a 19-over par, 235 final score. She had her first of two birdies of the day on her first hole, then proceeded to shoot 7-over par over the next 15 holes. Oleksiew finished strong with a birdie and two pars to tie for 50th place.
Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi recorded a final round 79 or 7-over par. She shot 3-over on the front nine with two birdies and 4-over on the back with one more birdie. Vivaldi finished in a tie for 57th with her 81-78-79—238 54-hole score.
Competing as an individual, redshirt freshman Tori Glenn recorded her best round of the tournament with a 7-over par, 79, which was nine strokes better than each of her first two rounds where she shot 16-over par. Glenn posted an 88-88-79—255 final score and was 85th overall.
Elise Bradley of LSU defeated Mississippi State's Rica Tse on the second playoff hole to win the tournament. Each finished 2-under par. Bradley's teammate Madelene Sagstrom took third, two strokes back at even par. There was a three-way tie for fourth place. Ally McDonald from Mississippi State, Leslie Cloots of North Carolina and TCU's Kortnie Maxoutopoulis each tallied a 2-over par final score.
The Buffaloes have a couple weeks off before heading to Napa, Calif. to co-host the second annual Silverado Showdown with the University of Oregon, April 13-14.
