Colorado-Oregon State Notes

March 06, 2015 | Women's Basketball

NOTING QUARTERFINAL WIN: No. 9 seed Colorado heads to the Pac-12 Tournament semfinals for the second time in three years after its 68-65 upset win over top seed and regular season champion Oregon State in Friday's quarterfinals.

Colorado improves to 5-3 all-time at the Pac-12 Tournament. The Buffaloes have won at least one tournament game in each season they've been in the event, but this is the first year with two wins. Colorado reached the 2013 semis after receiving a bye as the No. 4 seed and a quarterfinal win over Washington.

Four of those five wins have come as the lower seed. Overall the
Buffaloes are 34-27 in conference tournament games.

Colorado becomes the lowest seeded team to defeat either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament.

It is the 15th time Colorado has advanced to a conference semifinal, but just the second since 2003.

It is the third time Colorado has defeated a conference tournament No. 1 seed. The other two times happened in the 1992 and 1996 Big Eight Conference championship games, with the Buffaloes defeating No. 1 Kansas both times.

DROUGHT AGAINST RANKED TEAMS ENDS: Colorado snapped a 17-game losing streak against ranked teams and improves to 1-5 this season. The Buffaloes' last win against a ranked team before Friday was a 70-66 decision over No. 8/8 Louisville on Dec. 12, 2012 in Boulder.

Colorado wins its first game against a ranked team away from Boulder since a 62-51 win at No. 20/17 Vanderbilt on Dec. 9, 2007. It was Colorado's 15th win over a Top 10 opponent; 14th where the opponent was ranked in the Top 10 in both major polls. The Buffaloes claimed their first win over a Top 10 team away from Boulder since defeating No. 5/5 Stanford in the 2002 NCAA Sweet 16.

JAMEE SWAN (18 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks): Jamee Swan claimed her team-best eighth double-double of the season. She became the 17 Buff to register 10 career double-doubles. Swan climbed into a tie with Raegan Scott (1995-96) for fifth in blocks in one season at 61. She also moved up two spots in career blocks, now matched with Erin Scholz (1993-97) in sixth with 125. Her six offensive rebounds gives her 99 for the season, the program's eighth best mark since the 1987-88 season. Swan's 21 field goal attempts (8-of-21) were a career high and team season high.

LEXY KRESL (19 points, 4 assists 5-of-5 3FG): Lexy Kresl tied her own school record for 3-point field goals without a miss which she also shares with Jenny Roulier (vs. Missouri, Feb. 13, 2002). Kresl first went 5-for-5 in a game from deep against New Mexico on Dec. 29, 2012. It was her 51st career game with multiple 3-pointers and eighth game with at least five. Four of those eight 3-point outings have come this season. She moved her season total to 61 from long range, ranking 13th on CU's season charts.

THE CALIFORNIA SERIES: This will be the 13th meeting between Colorado and California with the Golden Bears holding a 7-5 edge. Cal has won the last seven, all since Colorado joined the Pac-12 for the 2011-12 season. The Golden Bears won the only meeting this season, 75-59, in Berkeley on Jan, 5. Colorado's last win over Cal came in Boulder, 81-65, in the second round of the 2011 Postseason WNIT. This will be the second Pac-12 Tournament meeting between the two teams. The Golden Bears, seeded second in the 2012 Tournament, defeated No. 10 Colorado 68-59 in a quarterfinal game in Los Angeles.
