Torres Leads Buffs on First Day Of Calif. Invite

April 15, 2015 | Track and Field

AZUSA, Calif. –University of Colorado junior Abrianna Torres is currently fifth overall in the heptathlon at the end of the first day of the California Invitational with a personal best score of 3,276.

Torres had an outstanding first day of competition on Wednesday afternoon. She was just shy of a PR in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish in 14.57 seconds and in the second event, Torres cleared a PR in the high jump, reaching 5-6. She threw over 40 feet in the shot put, notching a throw of 41-11.50 for second overall, before finishing the day with a time of 25.58 in the 200.

“Overall this was an incredibly good day for my group,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “AB (Abrianna) has a 60-point PR over her Texas Relay's first day score and she is already high on the (NCAA) list, so if we can continue this and add a little more tomorrow, this can be a highlight in this season for her.”

CU also has three other athletes competing in the heptathlon at the meet. Junior Ewelina Pena is 24th overall with 2,819 points, while freshman Michaela Wenning is 31st (2,697). Sophomore Mariah Slack is currently 34th (2,614). All three had at least one PR on the first day. Pena cleared the high jump at 5-5 and Wenning finished the 200 in 27.23. Slack had a pair of PRs. She jumped 5-3.75 in the high jump and threw the shot put 31-4.

Freshman Andrew Ghizzone is 20th overall after finishing the first half of his CU debut decathlon. He started the day with a PR in the 100, finishing in 11.72. Ghizzone went on to record a jump of 20-4.50 in the long jump before throwing a mark of 30-6.50 in the shot put. In the next event, he cleared 6-00 in the high jump. Ghizzone wrapped up the day running 50.42 in the 400.

“Andrew is doing great,” Malone said. “He is coming off a bum ankle. He sprained it Sunday, so we weren't sure how this was going to turn out, but, he wound up having a great day. We cut him down to half an approach for high jump so he wouldn't put too much stress on it and he got a PR. He's incredibly tough.

“There is a lot left to be done tomorrow. Everyone we have out here really laid it all out on the track. I think day two is going to be especially good for us.

The second day of the California Invitational CE is Thursday.
