Torres Finishes 5th To Lead Buffs In Heptathlon
May 10, 2015 | Track and Field
LOS ANGELES – University of Colorado junior Abrianna Torres recorded a fifth place finish in the heptathlon at the 2015 Pac-12 Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday.
“It was an incredibly competitive field on both sides,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “Abrianna had a well fought day; it was her second best heptathlon total ever. In fact, her score from today would have won Pac-12s in 2014, so that just goes to show how great the competition was today. We were much better this year and improved in a lot of events, but everybody improved as well. That's the way it goes and you just have to keep getting better.”
Torres finished the two-day event with 5,455 points for her highest Pac-12 point total to date. She tallied 5,357 points in 2013, which put her third overall, and in 2014, she recorded 4,810 points for eighth place.
The San Luis Obispo, Calif. native had an excellent start to the day, winning the long jump with a 19-6.75 mark, five inches off her season best. She recorded her second best mark this season in the javelin in the second event of the day, throwing 119-7. The final event was the 800, and Torres gave it her all, finishing in 2:28.29.
The Buffs had three others finish the heptathlon. Freshman Michaela Wenning was 12th overall with a PR of 4,549, while sophomore Mariah Slack finished 13th with 4,326 points. Junior Ewelina Pena took 14th with 4,030 points. Washington State's Alissa Brooks-Johns won with 5,803 points.
Andrew Ghizzone ended his first conference meet with an 11th place finish in the decathlon. The freshman from Union, N.J. tallied 6,670 points, which moved him up two spots from 13th after the end of the first day. Arizona's Pau Tonnesen was the individual winner with 7,823 points.
Ghizzone started the day by clocking in at 15.68 in the 110-meter hurdles (11th overall), before launching the discus 98-11 (14th). He tied for fifth in the pole vault, clearing 14-10.25 and was 11th in the javelin (139-8). Ghizzone ended the day brilliantly, running a PR of 4:15.53, which broke his CU 1,500-meter decathlon school record (4:17.07).
“Andrew again PR'd on his overall score and he broke his own 1,500 school record for the decathlon,” Malone said. “Overall this season he has dropped that record by seven seconds, which is going to make it very challenging for someone else to break it by the time he is done in four years. He has also raised his decathlon qualifying mark for junior nationals, so we are going to look forward to that in June.”
The Pac-12 Championships will continue next weekend, May 16-17, at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA.
