May 08, 2015 | Soccer
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team departs Sunday for a 10-day tour of Spain, May 10-20. The Buffaloes' itinerary includes a stay in two cities, sight-seeing and scrimmages against three Spanish soccer teams.
The team's trip, originally scheduled for March was postponed after flights were cancelled due to an airline strike.
Colorado takes off from Denver the evening of May 10, traveling overnight to London, England and then boards a connecting flight to Madrid. The team arrives on Monday evening and will spend three days in Madrid before closing out its trip with six days in Santa Susanna. Both cities are eight hours ahead of Mountain Time.
“We have been planning this trip for over a year,” said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. “This is a great opportunity for us to play top professional teams while visiting all the history and beauty Spain has to offer. The team bonding aspect is one of the main benefits of this trip, and the team and staff are very excited to represent our university and soccer program on an international stage.”
The Buffs have three matches scheduled during their trip. They will play La Roca, RCD Espanyol Women and first division team Rayo Vallecano. Although the scrimmages are part of the itinerary, one of the main focuses is immersing the student-athletes in the Spanish culture. The team has the opportunity to visit various landmarks throughout the two major cities while learning about the country's rich history and traditions.
