BOULDER – University of Colorado senior-to-be Xavier Johnson tore his left Achilles tendon, announced Thursday by head coach Tad Boyle.
Johnson, a 6'7”, 230-pound guard, suffered the injury earlier this month in off-season workouts.
“The entire Buffalo basketball family is disappointed with this injury, especially for Xavier, who has meant so much to our program through the last three years,” Boyle said. “(His) surgery went well and we're expecting a full, and hopefully a speedy recovery. We're not putting a time-table on anything; we're looking forward to helping Xavier through this process and getting him back healthy, and help this program win more games."
Johnson is a three-year letterwinner, ranks No. 33 on the Colorado all-time scoring list with 990 points, just 10 points from the 1,000-point plateau. He also ranks No. 26 in rebounding (515), No. 26 in game starts (66), and is just outside the Top 25 in career starts with 95. His three-year average is 10.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game with six double-doubles (Buffs are 5-1).
Last season, the Santa Ana, Calif. native, played in 29 games with 15 starts. He averaged 10.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Colorado opens the 2015-16 season against Iowa State (Friday, Nov. 13) at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
