Simpson Advances At USA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. -Jenny Simpson, an Olympian and former University of Colorado runner, won the first round of the 1,500-meter run Friday night at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in 4:08.55, and automatically advanced to the finals on Sunday.

After a false start in the second heat, Simpson moved to the front of the pack and was second through the first 1,100 meters. As the field entered the bell lap, Simpson started to make her move to pass Heather Kampf, running just on her shoulder. With 250 meters left, Simpson took the lead and never looked back.

Another Buff, recent graduate Sara Sutherland, was also racing the 1,500 at the championships in the third heat. She was eighth through the first 300 meters, but the pack was very tight. Sutherland moved up to seventh entering the bell lap, but the leaders pulled away and she wasn't able to keep pace and remained in seventh, finishing in 4:22.65 to end her collegiate career.

Sophomore Andrew Ghizzone wrapped up action in the men's junior decathlon, scoring 6,522 points for 10th place. He started the day running 15.55 in the 110-meter hurdles and then threw the discus 113-6. Ghizzone then cleared his second best pole vault mark of the season at 15-3, just two inches shy of his season best. In the javelin, he recorded a toss of 126-8 and finished the day running 4:32.98 in the 1,500.
Sophomore Mariah Walker competed in the women's junior shot put for the Buffs and finished 16th overall with a toss of 43-5.75, which she recorded on the first throw of her series.
The championships continue through Sunday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
