Colorado Drops 1-0 Overtime Decision To Northwestern

September 13, 2015 | Soccer

BOULDER -- The Colorado Buffaloes fell to Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field, 1-0, in overtime.

Colorado goalie Kate Scheele had two nice saves among Northwestern's 13 total shots, but could not grab the final one, resulting in the game-winning goal from Michelle Manning, assisted by Addie Steiner, 6:34 into the first overtime.

"Defensively, I thought we were fine," CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. "I think it was a good goal. Sometimes you have to give credit when credit is due—and that was a good goal."
It was Manning's second goal of the season, putting an end to the Buffaloes' four-game win streak (5-2-1).

"I wouldn't say it takes away from those wins, because the wins we've gotten have been hard fought wins," Brie Hooks said. "We put everything we had into those games and I think that is where we had our downfall today. We didn't put everything we had into it."

It was a physical game, with a total of 16 fouls; 13 alone by the Buffaloes. The action was tight throughout with both teams aggressively doing their best to gain control of the ball. There were yellow cards on both sides: one for Hooks and one for Northwestern's head coach, Michael Moynihan.

"I want to give full credit to Northwestern," Sanchez said. "To come in on a Sunday, I felt that they brought more energy; I felt that they played with more urgency."

Overtime might not have happened if it wasn't for CU's Madison Krauser. In the final seconds of regulation play, Krauser made a huge save, slide tackling Northwestern's Niki Sebo in front of a wide open net, keeping the score 0-0 going into overtime.

"I kind of saw the girl coming across and I just stepped into it," Krauser said. "I was just hoping she wasn't going to get by me."

CU came out strong in the first moments of overtime. Nikki Machalek had a nice block of her own, protecting the goal to keep the Buffs in the competition. Then Hooks took a shot on Northwestern's goal, but Wildcats goal keeper Lauren Clem saved it.

"I think all of us, myself included, weren't very active this game," said Hooks. "A lot of our starts from offense were coming from the halfway point; you can't really expect much from being 50 yards out from goal."

Northwestern improved to 6-1-1 overall, taking the second ever meeting between the two schools.

"Watch film, learn from our mistakes, try to pick up the energy in practice this week, and encourage one another," said Krauser of what is to come. "I wouldn't necessarily try to forget about the game, but move on from it; we now need to move forward to the next game."

The Buffs will return to Prentup Field next Sunday at noon to face Villanova. Stick around after the match for an autograph session with the players. It will also be Chip's Kids Club Day where kids in 8th grade and under are invited to come out early to the match and participate in field day activities including an obstacle course bounce house, craft stations, face painting and more. For additional information and to sign up for Chip's Kids Club, please visit CUBuffs.com/community.
