Women's Golf Finishes Tied For Seventh At Minnesota Invite

September 15, 2015 | Women's Golf

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Colorado women's golf team completed its first tournament of the 2015-16 season here Tuesday, finishing tied for seventh place at the Minnesota Invitational on the par 72, 6,119-yard Minikahda Club.

The Buffaloes shot 303 or 15-over par in the final round and concluded the meet with a 300-301-303—904 or 40-over par team score. There were clear skies, but high winds on Tuesday, which didn't allow for much movement on the leaderboard. In fact, the top three teams heading into the last round all finished in the same position from when the day began. Purdue held onto its first place standing and went on to win the tournament with a 20-over par, 884 scorecard. East Carolina finished two strokes back in second place at 22-over par and Illinois earned third place, just one stroke behind East Carolina and three back from first at plus-23. Kent State and tournament host, Minnesota tied for fourth with both schools posting 31-over par, 895 scores.

“We definitely know what areas we need to work on to get better and get ready for the next event,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “Esther had a good chance to win, unfortunately she didn't quite pull it off, but she is playing well despite the bum knee. We as a team didn't play well at all. We're definitely not at our best, but we'll get there.”

Junior Esther Lee anchored the Buffs team scoring, shooting even-par (71-70-75—216) in the 56-hole meet and finished in a fourth place tie, earning her fourth top five finish at CU. Lee carded a 3-over par 75 in the third round, playing even-par on the front nine with one birdie and one bogey, and she shot 3-over on the back side. Her birdie came on the par 3, No. 3 when her first shot put her within two-feet of the cup and then had an easy tap-in. Lee finished the tournament with nine birdies with three of them coming on that hole.

Senior Allie Zech carded a 4-over par final round and wrapped up the tournament with a 71-78-76—225 or 9-over par scorecard. She recorded her best career finish, tied for 15th overall. Zech started the day on No. 10 and went 2-over through four holes, but settled down with six consecutive pars and a birdie to get back to 1-over. She dropped to 2-over again with a bogey on her third to last hole and had a bit of a tough time closing out the round with a double-bogey on the final hole.

Sophomore Brittany Fan turned in her best round of the meet, shooting 3-over on Tuesday and finished at 14-over par 79-76-75—230. Fan was up and down throughout the day. She began shooting 2-over through six holes, then rebounded with a birdie and six straight pars, but the finish was also difficult for Fan with three bogeys, one par and a birdie over the five remaining holes. Fan finished tied for 38th place.

Junior Natalie Vivaldi turned in a 79-77-80—236 or 20-over par scorecard. The front side was the most challenging for Vivaldi in the final round, shooting 5-over par, but on the backside she was two strokes better at 3-over, paring six of the nine holes. The Oceanside, Calif. native finished tied for 52nd overall.

Senior Alexis Keating carded a 21-over par, 237 (79-81-77) in the meet and tied for 56th place. She had her best round on Tuesday, tallying two birdies 10 pars and shot even-par on the back side.

Freshman Lauryn Keating, playing as an individual in the tournament did not finish the final round. She unfortunately became ill after playing ten holes and withdrew.

Minnesota's Celia Kuenster won the tournament at 3-under par and F. Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina finished runner-up posting 2-under. Purdue's Linn Andersson earned a third place finish at 1-under, just one stroke ahead of Lee in fourth. Houston's Megan Thothong and Lisa Pettersson from East Carolina tied for fifth at 3-over par.

The Buffaloes have a short week as they will head back to the Midwest on Friday to compete in the East & West Match Play Challenge at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc., Sunday, Sept. 20-Tuesday, Sept. 22.
