A Record-Setting Performance For The Women's Golf Team

September 21, 2015 | Women's Golf

MADISON – Sunday was a top ten weather day in Madison as far as golfers are concerned— sunny skies, temperatures hovering in the upper 60s and only a slight 5 mph wind. The University of Colorado women's golf team took full advantage of the perfect conditions, winning the stroke play portion of the East & West Match Play Challenge, while Esther Lee earned medalist honors, firing a school record 8-under par 64 in the second round,

Lee shot 7-under par, 137 over the two rounds, breaking the previous CU 36-hole record of 138 set more than seven years ago by Emily Childs. Her 64 in the second round is now the lowest 18 hole score ever recorded in school history, besting the previous record, 66, set in 2011. Another record Lee set in her second round, the eight birdies she drained is now the most ever recorded in a single-round. Her 31 on the back side tied a program record. In comparison to both the men and women's CU golfers, past and present, her 64 ranks among one of the lowest scores all-time. She also set a University Ridge Course women's collegiate 18-hole scoring record, replacing the previous 65 course record held by four players.

As a whole, Colorado was the only squad to post a sub-par team score, shooting 11-under, 292-277—569, which ranks as the third lowest team score in the CU record book and their 277 in the second round matched the lowest all-time 18 hole mark and tied the University Ridge Golf Course's lowest 18-hole score ever recorded in a women's collegiate meet.

Senior Alexis Keating also turned in a stellar performance, shooting 71-69—140 or 4-under par and finished stroke play in third place. She combined to drain nine birdies over the 36 holes and it was the first time in program history that two players finished in the top three of an event.

The Buffaloes will face No. 4 seed Indiana on Monday in the first of two match play rounds.
