Golfers Finish 11th At New Mexico Tucker Invitational
September 26, 2015 | Men's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team played a little better here Saturday but the Buffaloes couldn't dig out of a hole they dug after two rounds, moving up one spot for an 11th place finish in the New Mexico Tucker Invitational.
Host New Mexico, as it often does, ran away with its own meet, leading from start to finish in posting a 24-under par 840 team score. Texas Tech was a distant second, some 19 strokes back with an 859 total. UNLV and Colorado State tied for third at 868, with San Diego State rounding out the top five with an 872.
The Buffaloes tied for the seventh-best score in the final round with a 10-over 298, as the course was set very tough and only the Lobos finished under par on the day. Colorado closed with an 896 score, or 32-over par.
Junior Jeremy Paul fashioned a 1-under par 71 Saturday to finish in a 21st place tie with a 3-over 219 for 54 holes on the 7,556-yard, par 72 UNM Championship Course layout. It was one of just 10 scores in red numbers (under par) in the 100-man field for the final round. He had team highs of four and 10 birdies in the last round and overall for the Buffaloes, also logging 12 pars, a bogey and a double to close things out here.
Paul's under par round, the only one recorded by a CU golfer here this weekend, added to his school record total which is now at 37; he topped the old mark of 35 set by Kane Webber ('04) earlier this year.
"Really nice round today from Jeremy,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “For the most part the guys gave great effort the entire tournament and I am proud of them for that. Tournaments like this are inevitable and they can be great learning experiences if you fight through them and compete until the end. I am confident the guys will come out Monday (in CU's home meet) with something to prove."
Senior Philip Juel-Berg, who entered this meet with one of the nation's top scoring averages (68.0), never got untracked here. Though only enduring one big number over the course of the weekend, he finished tied for 34th after a 3-over 75 which gave him a 7-over 223 overall. He had nine birdies and 31 pars, but had 15 holes of bogey or worse, over twice as many (seven) as he had in the first five rounds of the season.
Freshman Ross Macdonald closed with a 4-over 76 to give him a 9-over 225, tying him for 45th; he had eight birdies and 31 pars on his scorecards. Junior Ethan Freeman tied for 65th after also posting a 76, as he finished up with a 13-over 229 total; he had six birdies and a team-best 33 pars here.
Another true freshman, Pierce Aichinger, tied for 93rd with a 25-over 241 total. He struggled to an 85 Saturday, managing just eight pars, falling victim as many frosh often do on the UNM track.
The Buffs now turn right around and will host the Sixth Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational at Boulder Country Club on Monday and Tuesday. The meet, named for CU's late golf coach who passed away in 2005, features 14 schools from around the nation and is being held at BCC for the first time.
