Lacrosse Celebrates 2015 Season At Team Banquet
September 27, 2015 | Lacrosse
BOULDER – The University of Colorado lacrosse team gathered together on Sunday morning to celebrate its 2015 season and look forward to the upcoming year at its annual banquet.
The Buffaloes had a lot to celebrate with their families, who were also in attendance along with athletic department staff and donors. The Buffs' 2015 season, their second as a varsity sport marked the second straight year Colorado finished with 11 wins, posting an 11-7 overall record and finished in fourth place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Buffaloes also earned a berth in the conference tournament, advancing to the semifinals for a second straight year.
Head coach Ann Elliott spent some time thanking the parents and staff for their continued support of the program. Senior Sarah Lautman and junior Katie Macleay also spoke about the team's 2015 successes and the goals for the upcoming season. In place of handing out individual player awards, the team has created its own tradition. Elliott distributes little coins to deserving members of the team as recognition for their extraordinary accomplishments either on off the field.
“A lot of teams have awards at banquets, I'm not too much a believer in individual awards,” said Elliott. “I truly believe every kid on this team has an impact and role every single day. So if we were going to give out awards, we would be giving one to everybody because that's my belief. The girls hear me say it all the time. Last year we had 31 girls in the program, everyone single one of them is deserving of the award for most improved and hardest working.”
Some of those who received coins were juniors Perri Baker, Maddie DeWinter, Tori Link, Marie Moore and Paige Soenksen as they each became the first Buffaloes named to the MPSF All-Academic team.
The banquet concluded a busy weekend, which started with the team's first fall exhibition game on Saturday as the Buffs prepare for their season opener in February.
“The goals for this year are set extremely high by every player in this room,” Elliott said. “We have a lot of work to do to get to where we need to go. We're going to work hard and we're going to get there. We truly have the leadership, the commitment and the dedication across every single one of our players to do that. It's really exciting to see.”
