September 29, 2015 | Soccer
BOULDER - Soccer's Emily Paxton and football's Jered Bell were named the CU Athletes of the Week for the week of September 21-27.
Paxton, a senior, helped lead the University of Colorado women's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime win last Sunday, upsetting 14th-ranked California in the Pac-12 opener. Paxton scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute when she received the ball on the far post after sophomore Joss Orejel's took the CU corner kick and connected to head it past Cal's goalkeeper. The game-winner was Paxton's first of her career and it propelled the Buffs to their first win over the Bears in the last four meetings (1-2-1).
Paxton was also involved in the Buffs' first scoring play earlier in the match, she tallied an assist on Brittney Stark's game-tying goal just before halftime. Paxton was one of just two players with two shots on goal and led all players with three points (1 goal, 1 assist).
Bell had two interceptions in the 48-0 win over Nicholls State on Saturday. Picking off his fifth and sixth career passes, he is the first Buff to have two in a game since Greg Henderson against Oregon on Oct. 5, 2013; it was the 75th time in CU history a player had two or more in a game.
He showed he fully recovered from a second torn ACL and subsequently a second missed full season as he is a sixth-year senior.
Also nominated this week's honors: Esther Lee (golf).
Lee, a junior on the women's golf team went unbeaten in her two matches last week at the East & West Match Play Challenge in Madison, Wisc., guiding the Buffaloes to a second place finish. Lee defeated both opponents rather easily by the same 5 & 4 score each time. She played 28 holes total and finished with eight birdies.
This is Lee's second nomination of the year.
