PARKER — The University of Colorado men's golf team was tied for fourth place with a few holes remaining before darkness halted play here Monday in the University of Denver's inaugural Paintbrush Invitational.
The tournament at the challenging Colorado Golf Club (7,357 yards, par-72) features six top 40 teams, including four in the top 20. No. 3 Oklahoma State holds a one-shot lead over both No. 7 Texas Tech and No. 40 New Mexico, as the Cowboys are 7-under par, due to a good second round score of 9-under with two-to-four holes left for their players. The Buffaloes, ranked No. 19, and defending NCAA champion Oregon, ranked No. 14, are tied for fourth with 2-under par team efforts.
Senior Ethan Freeman is leading the Buffalo charge, as he is 3-under with three holes to play which has him tied for fourth overall. He opened the day with a 2-over 74, but caught fire at the start of his second round; starting on No. 8, he reeled off seven birdies and a bogey on his first nine holes, eventually scoring a 5-under 31 on the back nine en route to standing at 5-under par with Nos. 3-5 left to play, all of which are par-4 configurations.
Two other Buffaloes are in the top 15, senior Jeremy Paul and his twin, junior Yannik Paul; Jeremy is tied for 11th at 2-under with two holes to play to close out his second round, while Yannik is 1-under with three holes remaining.
"We really had a good second round going after a fairly pedestrian first round, CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We didn't play as well as we know we can and just got off to a slow start. We were 5-over early in the round and that's what we finished at, so we did a good job to close out the first round and then got things going in the second.
"The course is playing pretty hard, but it's a really a good test of golf," he added. "If you're playing well, you have a chance to post a really good score. But you can't fake it out here, there are a lot of bad places you can hit it. So if you're not on your game, you're not going to score well."
Denver's Petter Mikalsen is the individual leader, as he is 9-under with two holes remaining in his second round. He opened with a 2-under 70, and was 7-under when play was called; he shot a 30 on the back nine to zoom into the lead, which he owns by two strokes.
The tournament will conclude Tuesday with the completion of the second round followed by the third and final round.
