Buffs Ranked No. 23 In Final Coaches' Poll
December 06, 2016 | Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Colorado's women's soccer team finished the 2016 season ranked No. 23 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll on Tuesday. It is the first time since 2008 the Buffs have been ranked in the final poll of the year.
CU put together one of the most impressive turnarounds in NCAA history and the biggest one-season jump in the Pac-12 standings ever. Coming off a last-place finish in 2015, head coach Danny Sanchez led Colorado to a tie for second-place in 2016 and the Buffs ended the year with a 15-6-1 overall record, tying the school record for wins in a season. The season included a 10-match winning streak, the second-longest in school history. CU also reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 1-0 to third-ranked and No. 1 seed South Carolina after a 3-1 win over Oklahoma State in the first round.
Danica Evans and Taylor Kornieck were both named first-team all-Pac-12 this season and both players ranked in the top 50 nationally in goals scored. Kornieck also earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Kornieck's six game-winning goals were the ninth-most in the country this season. Additionally, redshirt freshman Jalen Tompkins finished 25th nationally in save percentage (.855).
