Golfers Remain In Third at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate
February 20, 2016 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team remained in third place due to another solid performance here Saturday as the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate was put into the books.
No. 46 Kansas maintained its lead, posting a two-day score of 1-under 575; the Jayhawks expanded their lead from three to five strokes with No. 36 Texas Tech moving from fourth into second after shooting the day's best round, a 1-over 289. With a 580 score, the Red Raiders are one shot ahead of the No. 69 Buffaloes, in at 5-over 581. No. 51 TCU dropped from second into fourth at 583, but there's now clear separation between the top four and the rest of the field, as host Wyoming and Cal Poly are tied for fifth with 503 scores.
Senior Philip Juel-Berg is the top Buffalo through 36 holes, shooting a 3-under 69 Saturday for a 3-under 141 total on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course layout; that has him tied for third in the individual standings. He birdied the par-5 No. 4 to go 1-under early and then reeled off eight straight pars before bogeying the par-4 13th. But he got hot late, scoring birdies on his last three holes to close the day on a hot streak. He's played both the par-3 and par-4 holes and the par-5's at 3-under here even through two rounds, tied for seventh, fourth and 11th, respectively in the 116-man field.
Junior Jeremy Paul fashioned a 1-over 73 for an even 144 total that has him tied for 10th. He had 15 pars on Saturday, tied for the most in the field, with a birdie and two bogeys, one of which came late on the par-4 16th.
Freshmen Ross Macdonald shot a 5-over 77 for an overall 150 score (6-over, tying him for 38th), as he had one birdie and 13 pars with two bogeys and two doubles. He doubled No. 3 but settled down and was just 1-over through 13, but struggled down the stretch, playing his last four holes at 5-over par.
Freshmen Wilson Belk had his struggles as well, turning in a collegiate-high 81 that has him in at 10-over 154, tying him for 72nd. He managed 12 pars for his round, but had three bogeys and three doubles, all coming in his first 10 holes as he came back to score pars on his final eight holes.
Junior Ethan Freeman rebounded from an opening round 86 for a 1-over 73 in the second round, his 159 total (15-over) having him tied for 101st. He had two birdies and 13 pars (with three bogeys) compared to just seven pars and no red numbers on Friday. His 13-stroke improvement from one round to the next tied for the 15th-best in school history,
Sophomore John Souza and freshman Pierce Aichinger are competing here as individuals, meaning their scores do not count toward CU's overall team total. Souza fired a 1-under 71 for a 147 total (3-over), which has him tied for 18th overall as well as for first among 16 players competing here individually in what you could say is their own mini-tournament. He had three birdies and 13 pars in recording his NCAA collegiate best score.
Aichinger had a little bit better day, following up an opening round 82 with a 6-over 78; that has him in at 16-over 160 which has him tied for 106th. After no birdies on Friday, he came back with four on Saturday but still had seven holes worse than par like he did for the first 18 holes.
“All in all we are in a good position,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “Philip really closed his round out in great fashion with three straight birdies to shoot 69. That was a really good score today – the golf course played tough. It was really firm, the hole locations were challenging and mostly tees were all the way back. Ethan did a nice job coming back from a tough first round. And John played well today as an individual.
“We are in a good position for tomorrow,” he added. “It will be very important for all five guys to play well. If we can do that I am confident we will have a chance to win.”
Low scores were again a rarity in the second round: only three scores in the 60s were recorded, one by Juel-Berg, and only eight through 36 holes. There have been just 11 rounds under par recorded each day as the average score for the field remained over four strokes higher than par (76.13).
Colorado has for the most part avoided big numbers here, its five designated scorers leading the field in pars with 120. Buff duffers have just nine holes worse than bogey, but spaced those out over the two rounds (five Saturday).
Gonzaga's Sean Walsh took over the individual lead, as he shot a 71 Saturday to go with his opening 68 for a 5-under 139 total. TCU's Sarosh Adi slipped from first to second with a 73 for a 140 total, and then a three-way tie for third at 141 that includes CU's Juel-Berg.
The final round of the tournament will commence Sunday morning. The Buffaloes will tee off on No. 1 between 8:40 and 9:20 a.m. MST and will again be paired with the other leaders – Kansas, Texas Tech and TCU.
