Scott, Stroem, Clark Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

February 23, 2016 | Skiing

BOULDER -- Senior Josh Scott (men's basketball), Mads Stroem (men's skiing), and Erin Clark (women's track and field) are this week's Athlete of the Week. Scott played well in
his last two home games of his college career and scored a season-high 26 points
against Arizona. Stroem swept both Individual Titles at the RMISA Championships,
which double as the NCAA Western Regional, this past weekend in Vail. Clark, the
solo female winner, earned her first MSPF title, her second conference crown
overall.

Scott's 26 points helped the Buffaloes beat a top 10 ranked team for the first time
since defeating No. 10 Oregon on Jan. 5, 2014. The win also snapped CU's 11-game
losing streak against ranked opponents. The senior came up big in the second half
against the Wildcats, hitting 8-of-12 from the field including six straight field goals
midway through the period. He also registered the 24th 20-point game of his career.
This is Scott's seventh time winning Athlete of the Week as a senior.

Stroem won the 10K freestyle race by 48.6 seconds, the largest margin of victory for
any RMISA race of that distance in over a decade since a Alaska Anchorage skier
(Kjetil Dammen) won the 10K classic at the 2006 UAA Invitational. Stroem then
came back the next day and won the 20K classic race by 39.8 seconds, which was the
largest margin of victory in that length race since the 2011 RMISA Championships, a
45.7 second win for UAA's Lukas Ebner. Stroem won his fourth straight race,
sweeping a meet for the second time this season and third time in his career.  He
also swept the championships at last year's RMISA Championships become the
second men's skier to sweep the championship twice, joining former Buff Rune
Oedegaard, but he became the first men's Nordic skier to sweep the RMISA
Championships in back-to-back seasons (Oedegaard did it in 2012 and '14). Stroem
has now won six races this season, matching the CU record for a men's Nordic skier
with Per Kare Jacobsen in 1999 and he has 12 career races, tied for fifth most in CU
history and third among men's Nordic skiers.

Sophomore Clark clocked a time of 9 minutes, 8.29 seconds in the 3,000-meter run,
which currently ranks 11th in the NCAA Division I. Clark was able to hold off
California's Bethan Knights at the finish as Knights finished in 9:08.77.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Paige Soenksen (lacrosse), Jesse Knori
(women's skiing), Haley Smith (women's basketball), and Pierce Murphy (men's
track and field).

Soenksen made 19 saves and posted an 11.00 GAA in road games at Notre Dame and
Marquette, leading the Buffaloes to a 1-1 record. She made a season-high 10 saves in
a loss to No. 7/6 Notre Dame on Friday and responded with nine more saves in a
winning effort, a 10-8 victory at Marquette on Sunday. She had seven saves in the
first half at MU, helping the Buffaloes to a 6-3 halftime lead. In the two games,
opponents were 1-of-7 on free-position shots against her. She also totaled eight
ground balls.
