Gordon, Castagnola Named Athletes of the Week

February 09, 2016 | Lacrosse

BOULDER -- Wesley Gordon (men's basketball) and Cali Castagnola (lacrosse) are this week's
Athletes of the Week after their outstanding performances. Gordon had career highs
with 17 points and nine free throws against Washington and Castagnola broke two
school records to lead Colorado to an 11-10 on the road at the University of Denver
on Friday to open the season.

Castagnola scored the fastest consecutive goals by the same player and also had the
earliest hat trick in a game. Her first two scores in the game came 11 seconds apart
at 27:57 and 27:46, breaking the previous record of 29 seconds. She scored her third
goal of the game with 24:45 left in the first half. By scoring three goals in the first
5:15, it became the earliest hat trick in school history, besting Darby Kiernan's hat
trick just 13:19 into last season's game at St. Mary's.

Along with Gordon's career highs he matched personal bests with eight offensive
rebounds, two steals, and 11 free throw attempts. He hit his first nine free throw
attempts and one of two his misses was intentional with 1.4 seconds left in the
game.

He also registered double-doubles in both games this weekend, extending his
current streak to three, stepping up in place of All-Pac-12 forward and Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar award finalist Josh Scott who was sidelined this week with an injury.
Gordon entered the week averaging 6.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, and
doubled his output in scoring and blocks and nearly doubled his rebounding for the
week. He played a career-most 45 minutes against Washington State.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Pierce Murphy (men's track and field), Dani
Jones (women's track and field), Alexis Robinson (women's basketball), and Esther
Lee (women's golf).

Senior Murphy opened up his final indoor season with the second fastest NCAA
5,000-meter run time of the season, turning in a performance of 13:40.12 on the
first day of the Husky Classic on Friday night at the University of Washington.

Murphy, who was running his first race since placing third at the NCAA Cross
Country Championships in late November, placed second to Oregon's Edward
Cheserek (13:35.86) in the top section of the elite field. His time was less than a
second from his personal record (13:39.29), which he ran a year ago. His time ranks
sixth in the nation.

Freshman Jones ran her first track race for the Buffs on Saturday at the Husky
Classic, competing in the mile run. She recorded a time of 4:38.68, which put her
third on CU's all-time chart behind a pair of Olympians: Jenny (Barringer) Simpson
(4:25.91, 2009) and Emma Coburn (4:29.86, 2013). Jones earned a sixth place finish
in the heat and ended up seventh overall. The time ranks 24th in the NCAA Division I.

Robinson averaged 11.5 points, three assists and 1.5 rebounds over the weekend
against No. 8 Oregon State and Oregon. She shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from the
field against Oregon, leading the team with 17 points and four assists. Her 17 points
were her second-most single game point-total of her career, just four shy of tying a
career-high.

Lee shot a team-best 145 or 3-over par at the Peg Barnard Invite in Stanford, Calif.
and tied for 11th place overall. She had four birdies and 25 pars over the 36-hole
tournament and the team finished in sixth place in their first tournament of the
spring season.
