Golfers Tied For Seventh After Day One of Stanford'sThe Goodwin

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened strong here Thursday amid windy conditions and stands in a seventh-place tie after the first round of Stanford's 48th Annual "The Goodwin."
UC Davis, ranked No. 101 nationally, turned in the only under par team score in the opening round, recording a 3-under 277 to take a three-shot lead over No. 8 and host Stanford and No. 33 UNLV, both of whom shot even-par 280 scores.
Colorado is tied for seventh after firing a 7-over 287 score, which also placed the Buffs third out of six Pac-12 teams competing here. No. 26 Oregon is tied for fifth (286), No. 40 UCLA tied for 12th (292), with No. 1 USC and Arizona tied for 14th (293). Overall, there are eight top 40 teams competing here this week.
The morning teams played in cooler conditions, with temperatures in the upper 40s at the start but with negligible winds; the afternoon teams had much more warmth and sun as the temp rose into the upper 60s, but winds gusted regularly from 15-20 miles per hour. The Buffs played in the afternoon and toughed out the conditions to post a solid score.
Junior Jeremy Paul led the Buffaloes Thursday, turning in a 3-under 67 which has his tied for third individually on the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford University Golf Course layout. He added to his all-time school best of rounds in the 60s with his 24th, doing so in his normal steady fashion with five birdies and 11 pars against just two bogeys. He opened with two birdies and closed with another pair among his final three holes. He played the par-3s even, the par-4s at 1-under and the par-5s at 2-under, all ranking in the top 14 in the 138-man field.
Senior Philip Juel-Berg fashioned an even-par 70, which has him tied for 19th. He had three birdies and 12 pars against three bogeys, and was within one stroke of par throughout his entire round. It was his fifth straight round of par or better, as he added to his school record with his 62nd such effort. He played the par-5s at 3-under Thursday, tied for second in the field.
Sophomore John Souza fired a 4-over 74 which has him tied for 66th; he had two birdies and 10 pars but six bogeys. He was even through 11, as he had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 18 and 1 (CU started on the back nine) to get out of the black numbers, but he bogeyed four of his final seven holes.
Junior Ethan Freeman bogeyed his first holes but settled down after that, hanging in as he shot a 6-over 76, tying him for 93rd. He managed just one birdie with 10 pars and seven bogeys. It was the fifth time this year he opened a tournament with a 75 or higher, but has averaged 70.0 strokes in the second round of those meets, which has helped him to a 72.29 second round average, second-best on the team.
Freshman Ross Macdonald also had some struggles in scoring a 7-over 77, with one birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and the lone double by a Buff in the first round. He is tied for 104th in the standings and like Freeman, has shown an ability to bounce back from a high score in the opening round.
"Overall it was a nice start to the tournament," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The course played pretty tough in the afternoon as the wind came up and was around 15 mph from the northwest. Jeremy had a particularly good round and Philip had a good start as well. John's round helped us and Ethan did a good job of holding it together. We expect he will have good second and third rounds. Ross just struggled most of the day after a double on 13 but he did some good things as well."
The average score in the field was a 73.88, or nearly four strokes over par; 18 players did shoot in the 60s with another nine matching par, with 18 players recording scores of 79 or higher.
UC Davis' Luke Vivolo holds the individual lead after carding a 5-under 65, good for a one stroke lead over Oregon's Aaron Wise. CU's Paul is in a three-way tie for third.
The second round is set for Friday, with the Buffaloes going off the No. 1 tee and paired with UCLA and St. Mary's at 8:30 a.m. MDT. The third and final round will be Saturday, with half the field starting at 8:30 a.m. and 1:25 p.m. mountain.
