Buffs Start Outdoor Season At Fum McGraw Quadrangular

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The University of Colorado track and field team was finally able to open the 2016 outdoor season on Friday afternoon, competing at the Fum McGraw Quadrangular against Colorado State, Wyoming and Northern Colorado.
The Buffs won several events, including the men's and women's 1,500-meter run. Ryan Forsyth took home the men's title, winning in 3:58.73, edging out the runner-up, Andrew Goodman (unattached), who finished in 3:58.85. Ethan Gonzales also ran a solid season debut, clocking in at 4:00.95 for fourth place, and Christian Martin was fifth with a time of 4:04.17.
Mackenzie Caldwell won the women's 1,500 crown in 4:40.66 and led a trio of Buffs to top five finishes. Val Constien was third (4:45.33) and Eryn Blakely was fourth (4:46.85).
Colorado also did quite well in the 800. Tayler Tuttle won the women's race in 2:18.14, while Justice Ramos was second in the men's race (1:57.67).
Jaron Thomas, who did not compete during the indoor season, led the Buffs in the sprints. He recorded a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish in 14.47, and was third in the 400-hurdles (55.55).
Darrin Haynes was the top performer for the Buffs in the open 400, finishing second in 49.43. CU had another second place finish in the women's 200 after Rajon O'Quinn earned a time of 25.45. Elissa Mann placed in the top five of the 400, finishing in 58.31.
The Buffs were also successful in the field events during their first meet of the season. Maja Wichhart-Donzo won the women's triple jump, leaping 37-06. In the high jump, Abrianna Torres and Kelsey English both cleared 5-5.75, but Torres finished third while English was fifth after the tie-breaker.
In javelin, Delaney Hall earned a runner-up finish with a toss of 136-11 and Torres notched a fourth place finish with a mark of 108-04. On the men's side, Christian Shaver was third overall with a throw of 167-02 and Joseph Martinez was fourth (152-07). The Buffs had one other runner-up finish at the meet as Mariah Walker was second in the shot put (47-06.75).
Sophie Hallam-Eames and Brady Rutt each came away from the meet with a pair of top five performances. Hallam-Eames was fourth in the hammer throw (174-00) and fifth in the discus (139-10), while Rutt was third is the discus (165-06) and fifth in the hammer (186-09).
Colorado has a couple of meets on the schedule for next week, starting Wednesday, March 30, at Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
