Holland Breaks Second CU Record In a Week

April 15, 2016 | Track and Field

WALNUT, Calif. – For the second time in a week, University of Colorado sophomore Ana Holland has set a CU record, this time breaking the outdoor 200-meter dash at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on Friday.

Holland, who owned the previous record of 23.54 seconds, finished her first 200-meter race of the season in 23.45 to place eighth overall, third in the second heat. The record comes on the heels of Holland's 100-meter record breaking performance last Saturday at the CU Invitational, clocking in at 11.63 to break a 26-year-old record.

Junior Jaron Thomas started the day's action for CU by running 14.19 in the 110-meter hurdles, which was sixth overall. His teammate, freshman Alex Billing, was 34th overall after finishing in 15.25. Thomas returned to the track later in the day to race the 400-meter hurdles and placed 18th in 54.62. Freshman Trenton Stringari also ran and was 21st overall in 54.92.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Patrick Carr, freshman Isaiah Oliver, junior Austin Mitsch and freshman Duane McClurkin Jr. had a nice performance in the afternoon, cruising to a sixth place finish in 40.83. Individually, McClurkin Jr. recorded an 18th place finish in the 400 after running 48.15 and sophomore Darrin Haynes was 43rd overall in 49.33.  In the women's race, senior Eileen Gehring recorded an 11th place finish, clocking in at 54.48.

Holland wasn't the only Buff who ran in the 200. Sophomore Tashay Brown placed 50th overall, finishing in 24.68. The men were led by McClurkin Jr., who placed 38th in 21.50. Mitsch also ran and was 47th in 21.68.

Senior Kelsey English was the only field event contestant for the Buffs at Mt. SAC, competing in the high jump. English placed sixth overall after reaching 5-7.

The final event for the Buffs at Mt. SAC on Friday was the invitational section of the 5,000-meter run. Senior Pierce Murphy finished fifth overall, finishing in 13:38.19, just shy of his personal best (13:37.05). Murphy's time is currently the third fastest 5k run by an NCAA Division I runner this season.

There were no track events contested on Friday at the Beach Invitational, but the Buffs did have several great performances come from the field events. Elisa Grandemange, a freshman, had a huge PR in the women's hammer throw, recording a toss of 181-8, which put her third on CU's all-time performers list behind Emily Hunsucker (212-11) and Janet Visosky (196-10). Prior to today's meet, Grandemange's PR had been 176-6.75. Senior Sophie Hallam-Eames turned in a 167-3 performance to place 35th overall.

Senior Brady Rutt was 20th in the men's hammer throw after earning a mark of 188-10. Sophomore Grayson Webber was 42nd (166-4) and sophomore Matthew Denton was 44th (162-3).

Freshman Delaney Hall was the Buffs' lone javelin thrower at the meet. She registered a toss of 130-10 to place 21st.

A trio of Buffs ran in the 1,500 late on Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Junior Nick Harris placed 10th overall after recording a time of 3:43.81 to take fourth in the first section. Freshman Joe Klecker was 16th overall, finishing in 3:44.55. On the women's side, graduate student Lucy Cheadle finished in 4:40.20 to place 81st.

The Buffs will wrap-up action on Saturday in Southern California.
