Golfers In 10th At The Maxwell

ARDMORE, Okla. — The University of Colorado men's golf team could never come up with much momentum here Saturday as the Buffaloes are in 10th place after the first two rounds of The Maxwell.
Texas, No. 1 in two rankings and No. 3 in a third, owns the lead through two rounds with a 13-under 547 score, good for a five shot over No. 28 Baylor (552). No. 9 Oklahoma State and No. 33 New Mexico are tied for third (554), with No. 43 Memphis rounding out the top five (557).
Colorado, ranked No. 60, posted two similar rounds in posting a 13-over 293 in the opening round and a 14-over 294 on the second 18. The 27-over 587 placed the Buffs 10th in the 11-team field, which features seven top 40 teams and all but one in the top 60.
Junior Jeremy Paul is tied for fourth in the individual honors race on the 6,586-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club Course layout after turning in a 68-69—137 performance (3-under par); he had six birdies and the second-most pars in the field with 27 against just three bogeys.
In recording his fourth and fifth consecutive rounds in the 60s, he set a school record, besting the four by senior teammate Philip Juel-Berg that he had last fall. In 14 rounds this spring, Paul has just one hole worse than bogey (out of 252) – a double bogey back in February as he has had none over the last eight-plus rounds (151 holes).
Junior Ethan Freeman is tied for 52nd after posting a 71-76—147 scorecard; he was hanging in there most of the day but struggled over the last five holes, when he scored two bogeys and a double. Otherwise, he had five birdies and 20 pars and eight other bogeys.
Juel-Berg opened with an 82, his fourth straight round with a high score as his stroke average all year has hung around 71, but came back with a 2-over 72 in the afternoon for a 14-over 154, tying him for 67th. He had six bogeys and four doubles in the morning, cutting the overage to just five bogeys in his second round when he had three birdies and 10 pars.
Sophomore John Souza also is in at 14-over 154 after two rounds, as he fashioned a pair of 7-over 77s. He was within sight of par with four holes to play in each of his rounds, but was 10-overcombined on his final four holes (Nos. 18 through No. 3).
Freshman Ross Macdonald carded a 77-78—155 score which has him in 71st place. He too closed with some struggles, playing his last six holes in both rounds combined at 8-over. He had CU's second-most pars with 23, but had just a single birdie to counter 12 holes over par.
Freshman Wilson Belk is competing here as an individual, and turned in CU's second best effort Saturday with a pair of 2-over 72s; his 144 total has him tied for 36th. He had a team-high seven birdies, tied for 12th in the 73-man field, with his overage in each round tied directly to one bad hole, a triple bogey on No. 1 in the morning round and a double on No. 17 in the afternoon, otherwise he had 21 pars and six bogeys on the day. He played the par-5 holes at 2-under, second-best in the field.
“Jeremy had another nice day, Ethan had a good first round,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “Everybody plays together here, which was a lot of fun (all teams play as a fivesome). “But for whatever reason, we weren't very comfortable out there, never got into any kind of a groove and it really just added up to an off-day, especially score-wise.
“Philip's afternoon round was big for us, he did a good job finishing it off, and coming off four uncharacteristic rounds for him, it was good to see him battle and get things back to near normal.”
The final round is set for a 6:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday (the Buffs will begin play on No. 10), but the weather is expected to be a challenge, with heavy rains, thunderstorms and gusting winds in the forecast. “I just hope we'll be able to play and finish this tournament,” Edwards said. “It could be a big day for us, and if we do play, I expect us to play with a lot of competitiveness.”
This is CU's final tune-up ahead of the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City, which are set for April 29-May 1.
