Men's Golf: Last Round Of The Maxwell Cancelled

ARDMORE, Okla. — The University of Colorado men's golf team didn't get the chance to improve on its 10th place standing here Sunday, as the final round of The Maxwell was cancelled due to thunderstorms that came with heavy rains.
The second rounds results were declared final, with No. 1 Texas winning the event with a 13-under par 547 score; No. 28 Baylor claimed the runner-up spot, five shots back of the Longhorns (552). No. 9 Oklahoma State and No. 33 New Mexico tied for third (554), with No. 43 Memphis rounding out the top five (557). UT's Gavin Hall was awarded medalist honors (66-68—134).
Colorado, ranked No. 60, was 10th in the 11-team field, with a 27-over 587 score. CU coach Roy Edwards had been looking forward to his team having a good final round, one his Buffaloes have often done over the course of the season.
"We were disappointed not to be able to play today, but completely understood and accepted the decision by the tournament committee," Edwards said. The Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club course was drenched from the rain, which did not let up until early afternoon and was predicted to start again later in the day.
CU junior Jeremy Paul finished in a tie for fourth place with a 68-69—137, or three under par. He continued his excellent season as he lowered his stroke average to 70.45 (70.2 in the spring), thanks to his last five rounds all being in the 60s, a school record. In 14 rounds this spring, Paul has just one hole worse than bogey (out of 252) – and none over the last eight-plus rounds.
"It was a very strong tournament by Jeremy," Edwards said. "He has had a very good spring and has positioned himself as one of the elite players in the Pac-12 and in the country."
Going into this weekend, Paul had the 19th best stroke average in the nation in relation to par – and the fifth in the Pac-12, behind John Rahm, Arizona State (69.41), Maverick McNealy, Stanford (69.58), Aaron Wise, Oregon (70.26) and Rico Hoey, USC (70.48). Paul, who hails from Viernheim, Germany, also finished 13th on the Team Europe side in the Arnold Palmer Cup Standings, as the top 10 make the team to square off against Team USA this summer.
Colorado will now turn its attention to the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City, which are set for April 29-May 1 at Salt Lake Country Club, a 7,209-yard, par-72 configuration; with an elevation of 4,800 feet, it will be the highest altitude the conference men's championship will be competed dating back to 1960, until next April at Boulder Country Club.
Edwards will likely finalize his team this week for the Pac-12's, as it's 6-for-5 scoring format, meaning six players compete and the five best scores each round will count toward the team score.
