Brown, Paul Voted Athletes of the Week
April 19, 2016 | Lacrosse
This week's Athletes of the Week are Sarah Brown (lacrosse) and Jeremy Paul, Jr.
(men's golf). Brown led CU's strong defensive week as the Buffaloes outscored their
opponents 39-4, posting a 2.00 GAA for the week. Junior Paul continued his record-
breaking season as he lowered his stroke average to 70.45 (70.2 in the spring),
thanks to his last five rounds all being in the 60s, a school record.
Brown had seven draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while
pushing forward an assist on a goal. She had five draw controls in a 23-0 win over
Saint Mary's on Friday and two ground balls and an assist in a 16-4 win over Cal on
Sunday. She caused a turnover in each game as well. Colorado outshot its opponents
74-15 in the two victories.
Paul finished in a tie for fourth place with a 68-69—137, or three under par on the
6,586-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club Course. The Maxwell in
Ardmore, Okla., was shortened to 36 holes due to heavy rains, CU finished 10th as a
team. He had six birdies and the second-most pars in the field with 27 against just
three bogeys.
In 14 rounds this spring, Paul has just one hole worse than bogey (out of 252) – a
double bogey back in February as he has had none over the last eight-plus rounds
(151 holes).
Also nominated for this week's honors: Pierce Murphy (men's track and field) and
Ana Holland (women's track and field).
Murphy finished fifth overall in the 5,000-meter run on Friday night at Mt. SAC
Relays, finishing in 13:38.19, just shy of his personal best (13:37.05). Murphy's time
is currently the third fastest 5k run by an NCAA Division I runner this season and
leads the Pac-12.
For the second time in a week, Holland set a CU record, this time breaking the
outdoor 200-meter dash at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on Friday. Holland, who
owned the previous record of 23.54 seconds, finished her first 200-meter race of the
season in 23.45 to place eighth overall, third in the second heat. The record comes
on the heels of Holland's 100-meter record breaking performance last Saturday at
the CU Invitational, clocking in at 11.63 to break a 26-year-old record.
Holland was also a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that raced in the
invitational section at Mt. SAC on Saturday. The 4x100-meter relay team eighth
overall after finishing in 45.38, the fourth fastest time in CU history. Later in the day
the 4x400-relay ran 3:37.99, which was sixth overall. The time is the sixth fastest for
the Buffs.
