April 26, 2016 | Lacrosse
Alexis Keating (women's golf) and Brady Rutt (men's track and field) are this week's
Athletes of the Week. Keating shot 70-66-74 —210 or 6-under par and finished tied
for fifth at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships last week at Ruby Hill in Pleasanton,
Calif., recording her second straight top five finish at the Pac-12 Championships.
Rutt led the throwers at the CSM Nature's Bakery Invitational with a second place
finish in the discus, launching it 167-9.25.
Rutt's throw put him second to two-time Olympian and CU assistant coach Casey
Malone (173-4.50). He was also second in the hammer throw, recording a personal
record of 197-11. His hammer mark is currently fourth in the Pac-12.
Keating's 6-under par set a new CU record for a round in the postseason and at a
conference championships as she recorded the top two rounds in CU postseason
history. She became the first golfer in CU history to have two career rounds of 66 or
lower and helped lead the Buffs to a second straight fifth-place finish—matching a
program best as the team recorded the lowest 54-hole score in postseason history
with an 864 or even-par team mark.
Darby Kiernan (lacrosse) and Dani Jones (women's track and field) were also
nominated for this week's honors.
Kiernan tied CU's school record for goals in a game with five in a 13-9 win at Oregon
on Sunday, Colorado's only game of the week. She scored three times in the first half
as the Buffaloes built a 9-2 lead. After Oregon cut CU's lead to two goals, Kiernan
scored twice in the second half to help the team pull away. She also won seven draw
controls, the most for a Colorado player this season, and was 2-for-2 on free-
position shots.
Jones cruised to the sixth fastest 1,500-meter time in the NCAA this season, clocking
in at 4 minutes, 15.29 seconds on Friday night at the Stanford Twilight, which also
set CU's freshman record. Jones finished the night third overall. Fresno State's
Annemarie Schwanz won in 4:14.89 – the second fastest time in the NCAA this
season.
The time also put Jones seventh on CU's all-time list behind four Olympians Jenny
Simpson (3:59.90), Emma Coburn (4:06.87), Shayne Culpepper (4:10.80) and Kara
Goucher (4:12.15), as well as Sara Sutherland (4:11.06) and Kelly Smith (4:13.88).
