Coburn, Kipp Selected To Pac-12 All-Century Team

May 24, 2016 | Track and Field

BOULDER— Olympians Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp represented the United States in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the first year Colorado competed in the Pac-12 Conference, which helped each of them earn a spot on the Pac-12 Women's Track & Field All-Century Team.

This team was voted on by a panel of 35 consisting of coaches, former athletes, administrators and members of the media. The top two vote getters in each of the 19 events automatically qualified for the squad. The remaining 12 spots, including ties, were selected from a wildcard ballot consisting of the third, fourth and fifth place vote getters in each event. Athletes with two events next to their name finished in the top two in each of those events.

Out of 220 nominees, UCLA leads all Pac-12 schools with 17 team selections, followed by Oregon (7), Stanford (7), Arizona (5), USC (5), Arizona State (4), California (2), Colorado (2), Oregon State (1) and Washington (1). Thirty-eight of the 51 members are Olympians, with 136 NCAA individual titles won (both indoor and outdoor). Additionally, five of the members on the Women's Track & Field All-Century team are also members of the Pac-12 Women's Cross Country All-Century team.

Bob Kersee took home the Pac-12 Women's Track & Field Coach of the Century honors, with UCLA's Jackie Joyner-Kersee earning the Pac-12 Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Century title.

Coburn, the 2013 Pac-12 3,000-meter steeplechase champion, became just the third student-athlete with eligibility remaining to qualify for the Olympic Summer Games in 2012 after winning the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the steeplechase. Coburn ran the fastest American time on U.S. soil at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in June of 2012, finishing fifth (9:25.28). The Crested Butte, Colo. native left her mark on CU's record book as the second fastest performer in the steeplechase (9:23:54), as well as the second fastest performer in NCAA history. Coburn was the second female to ever run a sub-9:30 steeplechase and did it twice in uniform. She finished her career as a six-time All-American, earning the award five times on the track, four in the steeplechase, and once during cross country.

Kipp became the first CU athlete, male or female, to win an individual Pac-12 title as she captured the steeplechase crown on May 12, 2012 and followed that up by becoming the third CU female to win an NCAA steeplechase title in June of 2012. She also earned the 2014 Pac-12 steeplechase title after redshirting the 2013 season. Kipp added Olympian to her list of accomplishments as she qualified for the 2012 Olympics by finishing third at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June. The Salt Lake City native ranks third on CU's performer list in the steeplechase (9:35.73). She was a five-time All-American on the track (four in the steeplechase and one in the indoor 5k) and was a four-time cross country All-American.
