Buffs Slip Into 10th Place Tie At NCAA West Regional
May 06, 2016 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team faced wind and rain here Friday in the second round of the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course and slipped into a tie for 10th place as they head into the final round on Saturday.
The Buffaloes recorded a 16-over par, 300 team score and are 27-over par for the tournament. Friday was very similar to the opening round on Thursday, where the Buffs played better on the back nine in comparison to the front. CU's four scoring golfers shot 12-over par through nine holes and finished at 4-over par on the back side. The sixth hole, again proved to be an obstacle as the team shot 5-over par with three bogeys and a double. Despite falling in the standings after its round two performance, Colorado remains in the hunt to continue its season. CU is only four strokes out of sixth place—the position needed to advance to the NCAA Championships.
“Honestly, we didn't play that badly today,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “We just didn't' have anyone shoot a low round and we didn't' take advantage of our opportunities, especially with our putting. They are all trying their hearts out. We just need to putt better, so we'll make a few adjustments for tomorrow and see what happens.”
Host Stanford leads after two rounds on their 6,269-yard, par 71 home course. The Cardinal are 1-over for the tournament and were the only team to record a subpar score in the second round, finishing at 4-under and thus moving to the top of the leaderboard. Southern California, the leader on the first day, dropped to second place, shooting even-par and is two strokes off the pace. Ohio State made one of the biggest climbs of the day, moving from 10th place into a tie for third with Virginia after shooting 1-over par in the second round. The two teams are 16-over par through 36 holes. Arkansas is 21-over par in fifth place and North Carolina is sixth at 23-over par.
Sophomore Brittany Fan had an up and down round, posting a 4-over par 75. She had 13 pars and one birdie against three bogeys and a double. Fan recorded a 3-over par score on the front side and 1-over on the back nine. After six holes, she was plus-3 and then made three straight pars. She started on the back side with a pair of bogeys, but had a solid finish, shooting 1-under with six pars and a birdie. Fan is tied for 21st place in the standings at 4-over par for the event.
Junior Esther Lee carded a 76 or 5-over par on Friday. She has a combined 36-hole score of 148 and is tied for 30th place. Lee struggled on the front side, making bogey on four of her first six holes. From that point forward, however, she found a nice rhythm, shooting 1-over for the duration of the afternoon with 11 pars and one bogey. She pared 10 consecutive holes and finished the round with a bogey on No. 17 while paring No. 18. She matched Fan with a team-leading 10 pars.
Freshman Gillian Vance matched her first round score with a 4-over par, 75 on day two. She split both sides of the course, shooting 2-over on each. In total, Vance recorded 10 pars, 2 birdies and 6 bogeys. She went birdie-par to open the round before a bogey on No. 3 dropped her back to even. At 1-over heading into the ninth hole, Vance ran into a tough stretch as she had three straight bogeys, moving to plus-4 with seven holes to play. She rebounded nicely, paring the next five and closed the round with birdie-bogey. Vance is tied for 44th place at 8-over par for the tournament.
Senior Alexis Keating played three strokes better in round two, posting a 74 or 3-over par, which brings her to 9-over par, 151 after 36 holes. Keating made birdie right out of the gate, but moved to 1-over with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 3 and 4. She had a pair of bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7 then played even the rest of the day. Keating made nine pars and a birdie over the next 10-hole stretch. She looked to finish at plus-2 on the day, but she, too had a bogey on the 18th hole. Keating is tied for 53rd heading into the final round on Saturday.
Junior Natalie Vivaldi recorded an 8-over par, 79 for the second straight day. She shot plus-4 on each side, making 10 pars and one birdie against five bogeys and two doubles. A double on the ninth hole put her at 4-over as she made the turn. She shot plus-4 over the next seven holes to move to 8-over. She earned one stroke back with a birdie on No. 17, but then had a tough finish as she bogeyed the final hole. Vivaldi holds a 158 or 16-over par scorecard through two rounds and is tied for 81st place.
The top five individuals are the only five golfers of the 96-player with subpar scores through two rounds. Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse and Alana Uriell of Arkansas are tied for first at 3-under par. Casey Danielson from Stanford along with Southern California's Tiffany Chan are tied for third, one stroke behind at 2-under par. Jennifer Kupcho from Wake Forest rounds out the top five at 1-under par.
The NCAA Stanford Regional concludes Saturday with the third and final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. MDT. Colorado's first golfer is set to tee-off at that time from the 10th hole. Saturday's forecast shows a high of 66 degrees and a 60 percent chance of morning showers. The top six teams and three individuals who are not members of those squads will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-25 in Eugene, Ore. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
