Buffs Continue Streak In Openers, Look To CSU At Home On Sunday
August 20, 2016 | Soccer
BOULDER - Colorado's soccer team has been absolutely dominant as of late in season-opening matches and that continued last night. Since the inception of the program, the Buffaloes have posted an 11-5-5 mark in openers after Friday's 2-0 win at Air Force.
But that record doesn't show the dominant stretch over the past decade.
CU pushed its unbeaten streak in openers to 13 matches on Friday with its last loss coming in 2003, a 1-0 loss to No. 2-ranked Portland. Additionally, that dominance has been led by the team's defense as CU now has 11 shutouts all-time in 21 season-opening matches and has allowed just a total of 13 goals.
The Buffs hope that momentum carries over into Sunday's home opener against Colorado State, where the Buffs take a shutout streak of 727 minutes and 57 seconds in home openers and are 15-4-1 all-time. That will not be an easy task, however, facing rival Colorado State, which earned a 2-0 road win as well last night at the University of Denver. The Rams and Buffs played to a 1-1 draw last year in Fort Collins to open the season.
A 2-0 start to the season would be big--CU has only started a season 2-0 five times in its 20-year history, and the past two times it achieved that, the Buffs went on to make the NCAA Tournament--both of those under current head coach Danny Sanchez.
Sanchez was pleased with his team's effort on Friday, but has some little things to work on for Sunday.
"I thought we started to get a little bit impatient in the second half," Sanchez said after Friday's match. "We kind of lost our rhythm a little bit. But I'm probably nitpicking. I thought we were good in the back. We maybe could have been a little better in the final third (of the field), but our first game out, not playing an exhibition, I'm pleased to get the shutout and score a couple goals."
The first 350 fans wearing CU gear on Sunday will receive a commemorative 20th Anniversary pint glass as 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of CU soccer, which started in 1996. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Prentup Field.
