Buffs Host Special Olympics With Colorado Cup

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team helped lead a clinic for Special Olympics Colorado Saturday afternoon in Westminster. Campers participated in soccer drills as well as a scrimmage hosted as part of the Colorado Cup. The Buffs were joined by Colorado College, the University of Denver, Colorado State and Northern Colorado. Players from all schools enjoyed an afternoon giving back to the Colorado community as well as to promote women's soccer in the state.
"I think it helps bring our soccer community together and promote our sport and how many awesome programs we have here," Colorado senior Kenzie Tillitt said.
Players often can get caught up in the intensity of a match and the pressure of the moment. That was not the case Saturday as campers and players alike enjoyed an afternoon of building relationships through soccer as well as an opportunity to reflect on the how fortunate the players are for the ability to play the game they love.
"When we play against other teams it can be very stressful; everyone is trying to prove themselves and trying to win," freshman Camilla Shymka said. "At the end of the day it's about having fun and coming together."
"It's an absolute blast," Tillitt said. "It takes away all the pressure and competitiveness in a typical soccer environment and brings us back to our roots. We have fun, we kick the ball around and it's fun to do it with people out here for the love of the game."
Colorado will continue its play in the Colorado Cup on Sept. 17, at home against Denver. The Buffs, currently in first place in the Colorado Cup with only the DU match remaining in the competition, will hit the road this weekend with matches at Kansas and Missouri.
